Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2015

I guess Tuli was probably the most recent Chimp to be born/reared at Twycross?

The problem is until they try with mixing them, they can't know the outcomes. Sad that Benji has died(for whatever reason) but it could not be foreseen. A bit like the Gorilla 'Mamfe'- similar aged when he had heart failure, probably brought on by increased stress levels/excitement after the sudden arrival of two strange Gorillas, SamSam and Yinka, in Joe's old half of the same house.

Yes Tuli is the youngest chimp at Twycross. Mkundi also had a baby, Holly, in 2005 sired by Danny, unfortunately she died in 2006, Danny and Tommy will be the youngest chimps after Tuli, both now teenagers.

Is it clear now / determined fully - following on from the latest genetic research - which chimpanzees at TWZ are pure-bred of any of the 4 subspecies and which are hybrids thereof?

I heard the giraffes arrived last month and it's wonderful to see them back for the first time they've been at Twycross since 2012 when they last had giraffes before 2 of them went to Blair Drummond in Scotland back in October 2012

Hello, btw it is the old canaryboy, it's just my old account was playing up. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what, if any, species remain,in the 'borneo longhouse' exhibit?
Thanks

When I last visited they had still got a full quota of the bird species to the left of the house unfortunately I don't have my list with me at present but the right hand side was empty on my last visit

morning all

planning to drop in again this weekend, anyone know if the meerkat/leopards are still blocked off or if its moved on, planning on taking the inlaws down

Anyone know anything about pregnant bonobos at Twycross? Heard that Diatou and possibly Cheka were pregnant?

Interesting it was advertised on the Webb site I think they had two one was a 3 toed sloth and the other was a 2 toed sloth that would be interesting.

There is still at least one Linne's Two-toed Sloth, on show between the owls and the far end of the elephants (where the martens were first kept). Can't honestly remember if I saw a second one or not at my last visit. They've not had any other species in recent times and there are no three-toeds of any species in Europe (unless there are any in private hands but I've never heard of any).

A second Two Toed Sloth from Twycross recently went to Sweden. It was wrongly thought to be a female but ended up being male (so they had 2.0)

Is the train currently in service please.

sorry should have put this up

went down the sat as we said with the in laws

all the main path is now open

waterplay was open and was extremely busy, not sure how busy the loos (old pets corner) will cope as the nearest place to realisticly change kids

going to sound an odd question but does anyone know how long the giant tortoise can breath underwater as it was "sleeping" with its head underwater for around 6 hours by the time we left, i will admit to not knowing much about animals (aside from the kids)

gibbon forest seems on track, one island was dug, moat lined and foundations for the building are down, saw several more moats marked out

bat eared foxes appear to be long gone, the enclosure has an "under refurbishment" sign (and if i remember has for a while) and looks a little overgrown but on closer inspection seems to have several new plants and the wire from the "cave" is less visible

caught the lemur talk for the first time since the walkthrough was built and was quite informative (still never seen penguin feed and been going there over 10 years now)

kids loved the parquet house, i know its not exactly new anymore (did anyone notice they had to put retrospective planning permission in) but its still one of the highlights of their visits (all 3 kids autistic and love animals, ones already drawing pictures of the zoo she wants to open - tho im not sure about the walkthrough lion enclosure she wants)

has anyone seen the marmosets in the trees yet, never seen them out yet

also does anyone know if the otters are expecting? one was pulling long grass and dragging it into the pipes, and they seem to have lowered the water level, again something they did last time there was kits

tired of the screaming near the softplay area, have to admit i eat elsewhere now usually the actually reasonably priced chippy (at least reasonably priced if you avoid the fish)

slightly disappointed by the orang extension, not because of the look or the facilities for them, but simply because i proposed to my wife on the bench at the cockatoo cafe end of the house, its extremely sad to see that you wont be able to go in anymore and sit on the bench its something weve done everytime we go, that and every member of the family has had their picture with the rose beds infront of the moneybar

any questions or comments please ask

Is it correct that you will no longer be able to view the orangs inside the new house at ground level, but only from an upper corridor?
