Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo news 2015

I see what you mean I should just drop that name not a problem in fact it will be a pleasure. Having many years of understanding chimps drummed into me I could tell you which chimps could go with who e.g. Ricky was not a fighter so he was put into the wrong group.

In your opinion then, what should be the make up of the groups?

I thought the whole idea was to eventually create one big group, so there may be a "master plan" were not aware of.

The plans for the new chimp complex clearly show provision for two groups and I assume one will be the potential breeding group with the new male and the females of the same subspecies.

Well even so, the "Master Plan" may mean doing the easy option is not the best option.

A rather suggestive wording ..., which sadly seems to become more commonplace on this thread. I wish people would stick with the facts or when allowing for personal opinions ... at least prove their argument. Sincerely myself, I have no problems with current management and Mrs. Redrobe and really think the zoo is doing a rather good job in the face of continueing financial difficulties.

For all good purposes: TWZ ALREADY has a pure-bred group of West Africa verus and contingent of hybrids. It will receive a new unrelated male verus from the Continent - I was under the impression it would come from France - before not too long and will be allowed to breed from the verus FF they have.

@OrangePerson, any concrete source for the claim that the new male verus would come from Germany (instead of France)?

Neither do I.:) There have been real improvements, both already, and in the offing.

Re the Chimps; they don't actually have a group of verus at present, but presumably some/most of the verus DNA proven females are already held within the largest group in the old Gorilla house.

I assume that's the plan too, though the Chimps may think differently depending on individual compatability. Will all the other males be able to live together in a multi male/female group I wonder? If not possibly some might have to be placed in the verus group but with some form of contraception to prevent them breeding with the pure females. It will be interesting to see the outcome.

All I was trying to do was to point out to Jane Doe that there will be a plan and they are working towards a plan.

And it is not we'll put chimp x with chimp y for the fun of it.

Just because two chimps get along does not mean its for the best for the long term. (and it what Twycross had in the past little groups that got along).

BTW, I fully support the new management the changes they have made have been great. I hope they continue the good work they have started.

Allright, @taun. BTW: I have never been suggesting to put chimp A with chimp B and C overnight (like that would be the way to go forward). It is very very delicate process to integrate any in existing or new group / constellations. Given the background of the current CEO, I would think this is a slow process with due diligence and in consideration of which chimps will work with one-another.

Dunno what the current constellations per group are.
Perhaps others might know more?

Basically, they are now at the stage of having 23(?)or 22 animals in three 'groups'.* One(A) of thirteen(?) animals in the old Gorilla house. One(B) of five animals(2.3) in the 'chimp colony' building. Next to them but still seperate are three males(C). I always tend to think that chimps that have lived a long time in adjacent enclosures with continual contact do tend to regard themselves as pretty much one group anyway, so I think B &C might be integrated without too much problem. Can't say how the ones in A (in a seperate building) might do with them though as they effectively form a seperate 'clan'. Depends on individuals etc. Some are bound to get on well with 'strangers' while others perhaps less so.

* plus one or two more males including the bald male Mongo, which are still seperate or as a pair in the second half of the old Gorilla House. N.B. incorrect- see next post.

I think they are all together now, Mongo and Jomar were definitely outside with Jambo, Flyn and the others.

The chimp who, to me, has benefitted most from all this is Jambo. He used to be like a little old man stuck in the green mile with Tojo for company. He's taken on a new lease of life now, with a big group to manage.

Of the three, Kip would be fine in a group but Danny and Tommy both have their own particular issues which will make it difficult.

Its amazing just how adaptable some animals can be, even after years of living in less than ideal social conditions.

Do you know the issues involved with Danny and Tommy?

My question is where are they going to start this new breeding group and which females are going with him ?

My guess would be one of two places;

a. the very oldest Gorilla House( most likely?)
b. Joe's section of the ex Gorilla/now Chimp house (if that is empty.)

Re the females- I believe the Zoo have identified by DNA testing about five Western females in the current groups, but of these only a couple are possibly still young enough to breed. So I don't know how many will go with him.
