Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2020

What is the point, bull Sudan is but a wee juvenile and no match for an adult cow ready to breed.

Twycross took Sudan as they are attempting to make a secure connection with Leipzig zoo. They have took multiple other animals from Leipzig to allow a good connection for hopefully have some finical and EEP allies. Twycross also has no records or training for keeping rhino's.

Rhino phase 2 will be a new house and animal exchanges to allow a breeding pair. Sudan is currently a surplus animal as he won't be able to mount a female and will be exchanged for a mature male.

From your short quip that may to you have sounded humorous, I did find it was rather taking the piss out of a serious matter open for discussion and for others interested in the subject on this forum. Even just re-reading your comment again, I cannot discern at face value from the transcription what you actually meant by "practice .... get my your drift" and how one was supposed to take it its content nor meaning.

Please be aware as such you can take a comment like that in quite a number of ways (as you also do not quite know the poster nor can see his/her expressions when reading it.

If on the other hand you would have put in a response first time round with a more measured response and tone as per your second paragraph in response, it would certainly made all the difference and I could have appreciated your contribution so much more.

All the same, thanks for clarifying your position more clearly on the 2nd go and I apologise for taking it perhaps the wrong way. I would appreciate that you may be more specific and clear about your postings in future, so we can stay all level on things.

@bintarong, thanks for your valuable info on the considerations for TWZ to take in the rather juvenile Sudan. This certainly makes a lot more sense to me.

Can you divulge what relationship TWZ wishes for with Leipzig Zoo though and how this is important to TWZ's future as both are already in EAZA and participating in EEP's?
(Also for a long time at least the Leipzig Zoo director has been a senior executive figure within EAZA and WAZA for some time now)

@Kifaru Bwana my apologies if I came across as forceful or Confusing, but I did not mean to cause any offence.

As you already stated they are both apart of EAZA and the EEP and so have exchanged animals. Twycross is selective in its allies as it wants to find collections with strong primate numbers. This is so they can eventually completely remodel there chimp group(I can't disclose much on this matter however it will be present soon :p).

Leipzig is famous for high standards and ape collections and so ticks these boxes. Twycross is hoping to exchange animals frequently to replenish the zoos old animals. With this twycross also hopes to recieve some support in the new ape accommodation as its becoming more necessary for its survival.

I hope this clears everything up, feel free to message me if anyone has any particular questions!

@bintarong, no you did not and it is OK. You are fine and thanks for all the extra info that you cared to provide, it makes all the more sense now to me.

My feedback on the first paragraph was to do over @ThomasNotTom whose quip comment I could not quite place (and which he later duly explained, but led to a lot of confusion and consequent response to his quip).

Relating to Leipzig: Yes, they have strong primate links (research station) and OKish good collection in primates. And No, rest assured there is no need to disclose what should be under embargo or anything. We will all hopefully find out in due course when things come to pass. Fingers crossed!

I will PM you when need be.

I may be going back a while, but does anyone know what happened to the sole Javan Languar, the orange one? I believe he was called Hamish? He used to live with his brother, the blue one in the Primate House on the left as you walk in?

Last time I visited there was a Javan langur in the former guenon exhibit near the small monkey/marmoset house that seems to never open, not sure if this is still the case though.

Thanks for that! I will have a look next time I am there. To be honest, I always spend the time with the Great Apes and then ask myself these things after :D

I was there in the summer and I’m quite sure I saw him, I could be wrong as it’s a species I’m not too familiar on but I distinctly remember seeing what looked to be one sitting at a small, high window of the building, I recall as I was quite surprised as it didn’t seem to be a guest window as it was very dark and quite high up, I’ve just googled the Javan langur and I must say it did look like one thinking back.

I can happily confirm that sialaing (Sumartan tiger male) is now making mating calls to jahly. The introductions are going amazingly and both animals are calm.

I wondered if anyone would know if the EEP would allow the reproduction between the two as they are cousins and jahly's past inbreeding(crossed eyes show this)

It’s good that he’s doing this and that the facility is suitable but surely they can’t allow breeding between these two.
