Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2021

Has the current gorilla house, always housed gorillas? I know the "new" bonobo house was previously housed gorillas and then the integrated chimps.

Chimpanzee Eden is a fabulous habitat, but why don't they paint the grey? That said, I don't suppose the chimps mind....

Maybe down to cost, while painting its not costly it will look tired and would need re-painting every few years.

Same can be said about the bare concrete but assume they are happy for it to become tired looking.

Perhaps they could grow & cultivate a vertical moss garden? Cladding it would be expensive, but smothering it in yoghurt….! Something should be done though because it is truly awful!

Maybe they just didn't finish it off before it opened...this announcement allows a fresh viewing of the 'artist's impression' of the new plans again. In those the walls are all green. I also notice the gorillas will have water(?) moated outdoor islands while the other ape enclosures all appear to be walled. The new gorilla indoors appears to be pretty much where their existing building is.

Mabey they ran out of both time and money the out side certainly wasn’t finished of tho the same standards as other recent exhibits. Now they have both time and money this can be rectified as they must realise it does let the exhibit down.

I’m not entirely convinced we will see any remedial works on Chimp Eden to improve its appearance. The zoo have had multiple opportunities now over the last 2-3 years to address it but haven’t, yet they’ve put money into renovating and extending enclosures which will be removed within the next 5 years. I fear the prison camp is here to stay, which is a shame as it really does ruin the outside views.

The enclosure itself is excellent ( one of the best in UK IMO) and I suppose the grey serves a purpose.
? I.e. enclosing the chimps!

Pop in yesterday the bonbons house is now open to the public have a couple of pics sorry for the glare but it’s almost impossible to see them with out glare on the new glass never mind getting a decent pic, the orangs house is still closed of also did see any out side either

I think you might mean *bonobos :p Otherwise, the interior looks good!

I'm not 100% sure where to put this but anyway:

I visited Twycross in late July/ early August this year and I noticed a gentleman with a notebook around the dikdik enclosure. Then, I went over to photograph the dusky langurs and I spoke to him as I hadn't realized the spider monkeys were in a separate enclosure as I had never seen langurs before.
We continued to talk, and we moved towards the emperor tamarin enclosure where he informed us that they ran across a rope onto some poplar trees, in which they did to our enjoyment.

I just wondered that this gentleman may be a member on here, thanks

I was at Twycross in early August and take photographs and make notes. I was pointing out to other visitors the emperor tamarins crossing the ropes as most people seemed to be walking under them without noticing - so that could've been me.
