Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

Just for my two pence worth on the gruffalo area, we where all aware of the development on there master plan as the children’s zone being next so what where we expecting. Provided the new enclosures for the apes get similar funding and aren’t being short changed by this development then I’m fine with this. I’m not sure personally on the theming of the area, as a regular visitor I can sone see the appeal being lost on me and the family of animatronics repeating the same thing on every visit. But I take the point on for other visitors I will make the zoo stand out from others on a national and draw new visitors from across the country, provided its been done well of course. I know my little ones are constantly asking me to go to peppa pig world so could see this having the same effect. Personally I would have liked them to have built a project elephant ( Blackpool ) or project polar ( ywp ) on the site I think they cost about the same or less. But it not my zoo, so given there recent success with new attractions / exhibits both on animal welfare and commercial success I’m happy to leave it in there hands as they seam to know what they are doing
I agree with all of this. We all knew a "childrens' zone" was next on the plan. I agree the orangs and amur leopards are in dire need of attention, but isn't the focus on developing the whole zoo for the future? Chimpanzee Eden, Gibbon Forest and Tigers are all excellent, so the other species will get there.

I’ve seen a lot of comments on the leopards and I honestly think that if they knocked the inner walls through and kept 2 leopards at most it wouldn’t be a problem.

Given they just got a large chunk of unexpected cash for there science center and new ape enclosures I would think there will be enough money left over from there current revenue streams to create new enclosure for the leopards and many other animals new and current around the zoo over the next few years that weren’t previously on the master plan

Visited today and saw quite a lot (in the way of animals anyway, humans were generally few and far between). Saw all 3 leopards, the two girls were very active and I caught a glimpse of the male. A lot of windows were boarded up or steamed up where the small (some not so small) monkeys are kept. That being said there was a lot of new fire hose and wood in these enclosures which was nice to see. Both tapirs came out and so did the Diana’s. Two bush dogs came out which was nice to see and the martens are always a favourite. Sudan was very active and Nandi unsurprisingly wasn’t. The classroom looking over the rhino enclosure was open yet remains elephant themed which felt very out of place. Giraffes were kept indoors all day. I did stumble upon a talk though in the giraffe house. Chimps seemed to have a quiet day today, down to 3 in the first group. Bonobos on the other hand we’re very active and vocal all day and I did catch them making use of the outdoor climbing frame. Gorillas had a little scuffle before lunch but aside from that they were quiet. Saw both tigers, Jahly was very active and Sialang anxiously popped his head out a couple times. Orangutan enclosure still blocked off although I did see Maliku and Basuki outside briefly. I had no luck with lemurs at all however I did see all three of the deer round the back. I’m not sure if it’s already been mentioned but the vicuña are in with the Mara. From what I recall they used to be with the tapirs? The pelicans were out but no sign of flamingoes (I assume they’re being kept inside due to bird flu?). It all seems a bit messy with monkeys at the moment with some areas housing none (the walkway to the rhinos) and some species were dotted about all over the place. Snow leopard was very active, but I’ve been meaning to ask, they did get a new male didn’t they? I remember the move was planned but I don’t think it was ever confirmed.

Overall the zoo did look a bit run down in places but it always does :p. In all seriousness though I understand that it’s a Monday in February so I don’t imagine they’d be too fussed about presentation and food kiosks etc. I thought I’d get a trip in now before gruffalo-mania .

Overall though I’ve had a good day :).

I should add there was a very small baby bonobo, does anybody know when it was born?

I watching the bonobos for a while a few weeks ago and didn't see a new baby. The keeper talk was also on when I was there and they mentioned Lola (b. 2019) as being the youngest so the baby must have been born very recently. I'm visiting in a couple of weeks so will ask a member of staff if there is no announcement before then.

And yes, flamingos are not on show due to bird flu :)

The snow leopards brother has moved to hwp, and neither of them are listed on the big cat sanctuary web site how ever a new cub is if this hasn’t been mentioned on here yet. So I would assume he is now at twycross given they managed to hide an Amur leopard in the enclosure for so long hiding a snow leopard shouldn’t be to hard, I wonder if he would need more chance to settle in given he has come from a collection not often open to the public. Like wise if he isn’t there by now I would think he is in another collection now, on the bonobo I’ve seen a baby in the left side now for a few months would think this is the one referred to

Well done to those eagle eyed, zoochatters who spotted the baby bonobo! How many does that it to? I haven't been to TZ since they moved. Do they still rotate the indoor area access?

I believe the baby take the total to 14 bonobos. Both groups have access to indoor and outdoor areas now they have moved, only one group is visible to the public outdoors though.

Strange how they mention the arrival of a vicugna but not the new snow leopard as I would think the snow leopards are a major draw for visitors. I wonder if the move has fallen through again?
