Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2023

Just had a quick look, am I reading this right if you go once a year you get free access for the rest of the year like a membership with out the other perks Tickets & Experiences at Twycross Zoo

Appears that way

“•Opt-in to Gift Aid at the end of your ticket purchase (at no extra cost) and enjoy FREE repeat visits to Twycross Zoo for 12 months.

•Repeat visits must be booked online in advance by logging in here > Twycross Zoo Visitor Portal

Guess they just have modelled that financially or on the assumption people would spend more inside the zoo if going again for free.

I don’t understand why they have done the new system where if you pay once you get to go free for a year. They have also taken down the 2030 plan from the website (unless I’m just blind)

Maybe they reorganizing everything. Maybe a new plan? All the news articles have the wrong single date as well.

The 'face value' interpretation is that research has shown them almost no-one is paying to get in more than once a year under the current system. If so, you're likely to make more money by letting them come in more times and hoping for secondary spend (in cafes, shops, etc).

This is exciting! Feels like things are moving forwards again! I’d assume that they will be adding things to the membership like e-newsletter, member events etc as an incentive to buy one, but either way bravo! New website is good too!

It's under "our charity" link with another menu to click for the 2030 plan.

We personally would do the 25£ day ticket and then have entrance for 12 months.

It's a good enough place, and we've been when they done 10£ tickets. But animal wise, we wouldn't pay the full price, as for us it's not worth it like at another zoo. And we wouldn't need the extra perks which you would get with an annual pass.

If that’s the case then they better sort out there sources of income, when I went a couple of weekends ago two of the three kiosks where shut and the open could only take cash as there machine was busted

I can confirm that the eldest northern white-cheeked gibbon has passed away (unsure why) and one of the male siamang in gibbon forest has left to go to another collection in the UK again not sure which one. They have plans to move the other male siamang to another collection who currently lives with his mom in gibbon forest.

(Forgot to edit my original post but it’s the eldest son not the father)

Recently I treated myself and bought three Twycross zoo old guide books. Does anyone have any pictures of the “Enchanted Forest” what I believe used to be home to South American animals. It’s opposite the zebras and next to the giant tortoises. Right now it’s home to Red Titi Monkeys and Pygmy Marmosets.

You will be very lucky to find any photos of the old Enchanted Forest that used to be at Twycross. I have been trying to find some for years but no luck. I believe it used to house Bats, Toucans and a few other species and it only lasted about 7 years before turning into a Monkey house for South American species.

The only photo in the books is a black hall way with informational signs on them. Im wanting to find the actual indoor enclosures inside the building what are currently used for the marmosets and titis. The other day when I was there they were very vocal so it made me intrigued to find what it looks like inside and what the enchanted forest was back in the day. Thank you James for the information :)

You are welcome for the information. I know which guidebook you are on about as I have that one too telling you a little about the Enchanted Forest. I do vaguely remember walking through it about 30 years ago but can't remember the full list of species or the layout of it. I only remember Bats and Toucans.

I have just about every Twycross Zoo guidebook that they produced but I might be still missing the odd one.

I've not seen this done in a UK zoo before, but worth mentioning that a couple of other UK-based attractions have used a very similar model - the National Football Museum and Beamish spring to mind.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth certainly used to do this - I don't know if it's still the case.
