Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

I don't know any other zoo that moves their animals around like Twycross but its because they have several primate buildings that are equally suitable for different species. The Langurs will benefit from the large indoors which will give them far more space than those little indoor areas in the old closed Monkey house. There will be less climbing/leaping possibilities outside though, unless they have added some more.
I’ll upload an image to the gallery of the enclosure. They’ve added a lot of new climbing and leaping areas for them.

The Francois Langurs have moved into the former Bonobo exhibit. This is due to the group needing more room due to the expansion of the group which currently consists of 9 individuals (3.4.2) The two youngsters born in March / April time are still unsexed. They’ve been kept inside during the settling in process but will be allowed outside soon.
Wasn’t the Lhoest monkeys in there if so where are they now?

There was at least one Diana Monkey in there today.
He’s due to move very soon so the enclosure will be unoccupied in the upcoming weeks I’d say. From what I know his move was planned months ago but has been postponed multiple times. It’s not ideal that he’s alone as the rest of his family moved to France but hopefully that will be fixed soon.

You’ll see in a previous post of mine I stated 3.2 left. That was posted a few days before his move was scheduled hence why I posted it as it was all set to happen.

There used to be 1.1 in there. They’ve now moved to the enclosure near the marmosets and tamarins.

The male ‘Kanye’ was born in the main group and him and his dad got into some fights due to him maturing so he was moved for the former bonobo with his aunt ‘Patricia’. This worked well for a few weeks until the animals noticed they could still see each other when they were both outside so the 1.1 were moved elsewhere. Since then ‘Patricia’ has passed away.

I really do not think this shifting out to the erstwhile bonobo exhibits is a vast improvement. I personally feel it is totally unsuited to Colobine primates unless a good deal of refurb and modernisation takes place. It is just a stop gap measure ..., and really just like the tufted deer move ... it does not signal particularly well that animal welfare is a concern for senior management. I am definitely ... unhappy.

Have a look at the photos... they have refurbished both the inside and outside areas to suit them. Inside in particular there is vastly more space than they had in the old monkey house (now closed to public access anyway) which has really small indoor areas- even if they shared two adjacent ones they are still tiny with just some shelves to sit on.

So one male Diana monkey still remains? I presume in that case its future destination wasn't to France with the others.

'Manu' is the adult male, correct? Do you know the plan for him?
As you may know the zoo had 3.2 individuals. The zoo originally had 1.2 (Manu the male and sister zoo D’Early and Sabu) D’Early had 4 children iirc. 1 DNS, 1 ‘Khari’ went to the Amsterdam Zoo and the other 2 ‘Diego’ and ‘Jafar’ are still with her. The other sister Sabu never bred and both females became infertile.

Manu is still fertile and was being “wasted” being with 2 infertile females. The family group (2.2) left for France and Manu is set to go to a different zoo as Twycross has no plans with them anymore from what I was told by some of the primate keepers.

This is the same with the Dusky Langurs. The current plan for the 1.1 related pair is to let the naturally phase out of the zoo unless Darci the female needs to go somewhere else for breeding. Again this is a shame as Twycross used to keep a large family group just a few years ago.

Other good news regarding primates at Twycross is the De Brazza’s Monkeys are hoped to breed soon. They brought in a male from Blackpool in 2022 called Marcus to breed with the younger females Zia and Chi. These 2 girls were both born at Twycross a few years ago.

The plan for the L’Hoests is to bring in a new male in the future (no set date yet) to breed with the 2 younger females Bikonzi and Tumba. Though this depends on the male Gemini who is around 20 years old. Gemini is the father to the females listed above.

Yes the adult male Diana 'Manu' is about 10 years younger than those two ex Newquay females were.
Any idea where he will go? P.m me if you like.

The primate section seems very confusing swapping all the time I can’t keep up especially with some of the same species in different enclosures

The Black Howler Monkeys ‘Fernando’ and ‘Zouch’ have moved to the former Francois Langur enclosure - this is only temporary from what I was told. The Howlers will be moved back into the their old enclosure which is currently being redeveloped (finished the structure - just need to finish the furnishings of the Indoor / Outdoor enclosure)

The Francois Langurs which moved last week into the former Bonobo enclosure now have access to the outside with the male ‘Shinji’ showing a lot of interest in one of the females ‘Yalu’ currently the only breeding females in this troop are ‘Pak Choi’ and ‘Lychee’ who have had offspring every 2 years since 2016 iirc. Both females gave birth earlier in the year.

Twycross keep a healthy troop of Francois Langurs (3.4.2) it consists of breeding male ‘Shinji’ and the two breeding females ‘Pak Choi” and ‘Lychee’. These two girls arrived in 2009 from China. The other two females are their daughters ‘Yalu’ and ‘Shiitake’. The other 4 (2.0.2) are their sons ‘Lionel’ and ‘CJ’ with the other 2 infants being unsexed.

For those who disliked the fences separating visitors from walking between the Dusky Langur enclosure and Orangutans has finally been removed.

The Pileated Gibbon infant is still yet to be named - I believe the keepers have a nickname they call her but they’ve not officially named her.

Work has been halted on the NSCC due to a (and I quote) “planning permission mistake”. A new version of the NSCC has been uploaded to the planning portal. Unfortunately an animal exhibit has been removed. I’m not entirely sure of why the “mistake” has happened or what it is though I believe it’s something to do with the actual Orangutan enclosure.

This is all the news from the last week or so.
