Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2024

Yes the male De Brazza’s enclosure is connected to the open topped exhibit but they haven’t had access for a while now.

Before all of the recent moves the De Brazza’s had access to all the closed topped exhibits on the right side and the Francois Langurs were on the left side enclosures.

That's how it was the last time I was there.

Thank you for the info. Is Flynn's heart monitor still working? As I got told that wasn't anymore before.
I asked a keeper today and they told me it is still working.
Is there any updates on the rhino? Last time I visited they were mixing the male and female.
Spoke to a mammal keeper who informed me they are still planning on breeding ‘Nandi’ but are taking things slow. She said ‘Sudan’ isn’t very confident around the female. They have been in the same paddock together but no mating behaviour was documented. Hopefully this answered your question.

In the summer I was able to feed him and he ran around the enclosure with the browse like he owned the place! It was quite funny to be told he’s not very confident after the display he put on for me.

Is he a proven bull?
I.e. does he have any offspring prior to arrival at Twycross?

Sorry the spamming the forum with messages:
Over the weekend and today I’ve been speaking with some of the Great Ape keepers about the animals.

Bonobos: The plan is to breed Yuli and Batia. Currently Batia is not as mature but they have been monitoring Yuli’s cycles which are a bit irregular at the moment but she is ready. As expected Diatou is taking a more of a back seat role within her group, this means Cheka is becoming a dominant female within Diatou’s group (when Diatou is in the same troop as Cheka)

Bornean Orangutans: Basuki’s future home hasn’t been finalised yet so for now he will be staying. They weren’t sure if Maliku will stay with Batu as they won’t be breeding from him again. There are plans in place for new orangutans to arrive at Twycross soon (no details on individuals).

The new NSCC will be started early next year.

Chimpanzees: Kibali has also been separated from the main troop as he’s been kicking off because he missed Jomar. They are hoping to keep those three together then introduce others in to get better relations with Tommy.

Something i found interesting was Tommy and Flynn both have heart monitors, Tommy is fine it's just so they can get a healthy comparison with Flynn who has heart issues.

There are still plans to bring in female chimpanzees but they have all been put on hold with the current group being split up.

Hopefully this answers any questions people had about the current status of some species at the zoo.
Thanks for sharing. Where is Jomar?

Missed that post. That's great to hear that it is still working. Thank you for asking!

Had a good visit to Twycross today in pretty good weather. Lots of people and the zoo layout does seem to create bottlenecks, particularly in closed or limited window viewing areas, but generally there was space if you waited a while. Twycross continues it's reign as zoo I visit with the most people banging on the glass like they are learning the drums, but there is an awful lot of glass to bang so that probably has something to do with it.

Enjoyed seeing the Michie's tufted deer on display again (they were off show when I visited last) and the updated enclosure is a more substantial space than they had before when they were hidden behind the tigers, though the viewing is a bit top down through wire. They were both out though and wandering around so that was great to see.

Nice to see the small primates in their newer space too as they had all been moving around on my last couple of visits. Good views of the Coppery Titi infant. The Mongoose Lemur and Greater Bamboo lemurs are good additions too, though I didn't see them. The Silvery Marmosets and the Emperor Tamarins who have the whole house near the zebras were also super active.

Highlight for me was the small finch walkthrough in the Gruffalo area being open as every time I have visited before it's been shut and the birds not out. Super views of the finches, particularly the Bengal finches which I really wanted to see. Also enjoyed the birds in the Butterfly House (they only had the Crowned Pigeons when I last visted so the pigeons and Turaco were nice there). All the Apes spent time outside except the chimps, so that was fun to see. Both groups of Bonobos were very active and the infant was sweet to watch.

Even the De Brazza monkeys came outside which was a first for me!

The area where the bush dogs were continues to be a little folorn with the former aviaries and the enclosures in use for the tortoises that held Dik Dik etc and that walk from the rhinos back past the wooden house with the pictures which is fenced off looks increasingly derelict, but there are other new things going on so there is obviously movement in the right direction.

As we come to the end of 2024 I thought I’d make a small overview of the major things which have happened in the last 12 months.
