UK primate collections

Re Twycross - I thought I saw a pair of Black-eared Marmosets in the first enclosure on the right , approached from the Giraffes , could be imagining it though .

I also thought I saw 2 Red-tailed Guenons in the old/largest Monkey House . The Crowned Guenon was also here housed with one of their Spot-nosed Guenons . One of the male Roloways went to Doue in France , I do not know what happened to the second female .

I would love to be proven wrong , but I do not reckon there is much chance of breeding from any of the Twycross Guenon groups . The Langurs that were breeding - Javan and Spectacled - have possible deliberately been stopped from breeding . I hope they manage to do something with the young Francois langurs they have .

I think there was only the one, a male (who has moved now)

The Lowe's guenons might seem the most likely as there is a trio(?) and aren't they younger than most of the others?

The Hamlyn's are halfsiblings and might do better if they were re-paired.

A lot of the others are probably too old.

i beleave that the golden headed lion tamarin male from Drusillas Zoo was moved to shaldon, called tiny. and is now mixed with the red titi monkeys

Drusillas acquired golden-headed tamarins originally to mix with the saki monkeys, but they didn't mix well and the tamarins left the collection some years ago.

I don't think they have ever held loris. Years ago they had douracouli and galagoes in a small nocturnal section but this is decades ago.

Hi, I seem to remember seeing a pygmy slow loris there at one point, in the bug house. Not sure where it was from, or where it went, as it soon got replaced by some madagascan tree boas.

It's always amazed me that Twycross styles itself as the "World Primate Centre" and claims to have "The World's Largest Primate Collection" and yet it has no Mangabey species, no Macaque species, no Baboon species, and no nocturnal prosimians. Four pretty important primate groups not represented there. Decidedly odd.

I know what you're saying, to truly be the "World Primate Centre" it really should have a properly representative collection (I've been saying/ranting this for years). To be fair, I don't think it claims comprehensiveness, just that the collection is "the largest in the Western hemisphere" which I believe is true.

Next question, how does it compare for "representativness" with the UK, Europe, etc? Off the top of my head, it's still arguably the most representative collection in (at least) the UK.

They are no longer on show however they may be off show. If not it would be a great shame.
