ungulates in NZ zoos

there are very few australian species in new zealand and even fewer new zealand species in australia.

i think this is a good thing. despite both countries being members of the same zoo association, each nation is best positioned to take care of its own species and any effort by one country to engage in a breeding program of the others species is unnecessary and a waste of money thats better spent on local conservation breeding programs.

i like my koalas in australia and my kiwis in new zealand.

@MARK, not sure if your being sarcastic there or not but I think it had something to do with him being kept with an immeadite relative, that is from memory so I could be way off...

I assume Mark was referring to the reason for only (if with a tiff of wonder why on earth ...)?

It may also have been as much a reference to the very fact that in small population biology and with regard to the whole Biosecurity issue, it is far from sound population management (and will eventually turn out to be counter-productive alltogether).

SPB is what Australia and NZ are dealing with long-term in respect to all exotic species.

the younger auckland female is valuable (from memory the most valuable) to the australasian breeding program, but has can't be imported to australia. likewise, there is no point sending a male from australia to NZ unless a) auckland commits to housing the extra animal and any offspring and b)the animal is surplus to requirements for the three australian breeding groups.

hopefully auckland might show interest in importing from here or elsewhere and she can be bred a couple of times. maybe further down the track the lineages can be integrated when import protocols change.

Well Auckland has two enclosures but the second one houses Snorkel who is over 50 years old... This enclosure however is to be replaced by the new Te Wao Nui exhibit, the plan at one stage was to build an off exhibit hippo enclosure behind the elephant enclosure but with the new announcement of a herd to be built, I don't really know what the plan is... I'm guessing the zoo is only interested in housing surplus animals till they are needed for breeding but the MAF Aussie ban must make the ARAZPA plan a pain...
