US zoos closed due to COVID-19 and duration

If their latest Facebook post is any indication, Woodland Park is starting to face financial difficulties...
Also heard through the grapevine today my local facility may be in trouble... :(

Special Memories Zoo has decided to permanently closed due to a combination of pressure from animal rights groups as well as being unsure if they can open for the season. This is the first zoo we have lost to COVID-19 closures and I hope it is the last.
Judging from the photos, it doesn't look like much of a loss. Perhaps one silver lining of all of this is that many of those crappy roadside zoos will be shut down for good, and the animals can be moved to significantly better conditions. Perhaps after this, half of the zoos @snowleopard visited on his 2018 road trip will be gone for good :D.

It might not seem like a loss to all of you, but it is worth noting that Special Memories was one of Wisconsin's best collections - losing it doesn't really have me hopeful that other zoos will survive.

The following updates have been made to the sheet:
  • Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari is only permitting drive through tours until 04/30 after opening for the season on 03/27
  • Tanganyika Wildlife Park is closed until further notice
  • Natural Bridge Zoo is closed until further notice
  • Oxbow Park & Zollman Zoo is closed until further notice
  • Special Memories Zoo has closed permanently*
*This is due in part due to ongoing legal issues faced by the park

I saw a news article saying that the facility had been closed permanently, although the article made it seem like it was primarily due to the ongoing lawsuit and the owner's declining health. The article made no mention of Covid-19.

I REALLY hope their Geoffroy's cat and booted macaques, among others, go to better places where they can still be seen.

Also, some updates along with a new link. Google Sheet link re: zoo closures

  • Monkey Jungle is closed until further notice
  • Butterfly World is closed until further notice
  • Alligator Adventure is closed until further notice
  • Potawatomi Zoo has postponed their spring opening date until further notice
  • Wolf Park has suspended all public programming until further notice, meaning the park is effectively closed to the public
  • Estido Island Serpentarium has postponed their reopening until 04/09

It didn't mention it, but trust me, it is. The zoo stated earlier that they had every intention to open for the season this year despite the lawsuit. Being unsure if they can open for the season put them over the edge.

Is there a species list somewhere?

~Thylo
After I started doing species lists, I intended to do one for Special Memories. Sadly, every time I visited a section of the zoo was closed, resulting in me never posting my incomplete lists! However, if you want I can try to make one from the photos and notes I have as well as my memory. It won't be 100% complete but it will be close.

I'd be interested, yes!
