Every day, thousands of innocent plants are killed by vegetarians.
Help end the violence! LOL:)

Pak n Save's naughty sausage ad offends vegetarians... | Stuff.co.nz
27 March 2012

Pak n' Save has been forced to pull an advertisement promoting "meat week" at its supermarkets after vegetarians complained it was offensive.

The ad first ran on television on Sunday, but it has been pulled from rotation and the company's Facebook page and YouTube while it is reviewed.

Wellington vegetarian Tashee Smith, 24, said she was upset that the sarcastic advertisement made a mockery of her belief system.

It began with a warning to vegetarians to look away while they showed meat on a conveyor belt, which was "okay'', she said.

"Then the punch line of the ad says, 'Alright vegetarians, you can look back now. It's a carrot. Just kidding, it's a sausage'.

"The whole tone of it I felt really was just quite offensive. It was made to offend.''

It was a high profile company that was often trying to promote organic, ethical and responsible trading, but it now came across as unwelcoming to thousands of vegetarians and vegans, she said.

Smith had emailed Foodstuffs to ask for an explanation and apology, but was yet to hear back.

Several people on Facebook also voiced their displeasure about the ad, claiming it was in "bad taste" and vegetarians did not need to be victimised.

The New Zealand Vegetarian Society warned its followers about the advertisement on Facebook, saying it went further than the normal jokes about vegetarians.

"This contributes to the underlying belief some people hold that it is ok to get a laugh on a vegetarian by tricking them in this way.

"This is in fact bullying, and particularly affects children.''

Foodstuffs spokeswoman Antoinette Shallue said as well as the online feedback several customers had phoned the company upset about the ad.

The ad was obviously "having a dig'' at vegetarians but was not meant to offend anyone.

"It was tongue-in-cheek, it was supposed to be a bit of fun.'''

It was currently being reviewed and no decision had been made about whether it would return or not, she said.

I think it´s ridiculous to protest against a commercial, HOWEVER, I can totally understand that some vegetarians can feel offended by it.

What meat-eating people don´t realize is, that vegetarians are being laughed at on regular basis, often by their co-workers, friends and relatives, they hear the same jokes again and again, (jokes, that are not funny at all), and every time there is a video or commercial like this, they have the link in their inbox from several people, usually with some additional "funny" comment.

You have no idea how many times I hear the same questions, how often I am asked to explain my reasons for not eating meat, how often I have to listen to all those "funny and original" comments and jokes.. It can be really annoying.

I really don´t understand why some people feel the need to make fun of somebody´s eating habits. I have a strict rule - I don´t tell people I am a vegetarian unless it´s absolutely necessary ("Why don´t you have a steak as well?") and I NEVER TELL ANYBODY that they should not eat meat as well. Does it help? No. They still feel the need to make fun of me.

The worst question I was asked (from several people!) is: "How can you live with your boyfriend, when you are vegetarian and he eats meat?"

Seriously, some people think that our relationship can´t work because we don´t eat the same things...

That being said, I would not protest against this commercial. I know that it would only turn against me and more jokes would follow.

I found this in last week´s Metro newspapers :)
I cut it out and put it in my wallet - from now on, I don´t have to explain anything to anybody, if somebody asks me now, I just show him this! :D

I like it.

It's always a bit odd when people ask. How did our lives degenerate into entertainment for the curious? I used to "respect" the questioner's intent and offer an answer. But now I often ask in reply, "Why do you ask?" That seems to lead to a better conversation, or it ends it right there.

I eat way too much red meat for my own good but I do eat a lot more garden vegetables and local stuff than average because I do live on a farm.

Haha, Thank you, Stefka! This is perfect. :)

Being raised in a Hindu household, I was a vegetarian for more than 15 years (I'm 18 btw), then I began eating meat. I still don't eat much meat, but I do when I get the chance.

I'm an omnivore. While I eat meat, I've adopted a more Asiatic approach; rather than be the centerpiece of the meal, it's mainly for flavoring. My vegetable content could increase, but I do eat a metric tonne of fruit.

There's no shortage of exotic fruits around my house.

I thought there could be only one. Don't you have to fight to the death now?

@LD: Of course we can. Vegans've been flaunting with them for years, including super health, super stamina, super morals...and as the video showed, super stylish hair. ;)

Amazing hair- the ultimate power! (Having said that my hair is usually a mess, never sure how many birds nests I will find ;) )
