The Virginia Zoo have had some exciting births to kick off the year. In addition to the first Malayan tapir born in the zoo’s history:

They have also welcomed:

A two-toed sloth infant was born March 8 to Mervin and Honey. It’s the first sloth born in the zoo’s history as well as the first for it’s parents. It’s gender is still unknown.

A Victoria crowned pigeon chick hatched March 20. The chick (gender unknown) joins it’s parents and sister (hatched March 28 2019) at the zoo.

A male Eastern bongo calf was born April 1 to Bob and Betty and has been named Blip. The zoo now has seven bongos - including adults Juni, Bob and Betty; the three born last year Charlie (Bob x Jesi), Johnny (Bob x Juni) and Boomer (Bob x Betty); and now Blip.

The Virginia Zoo has welcomed it’s second Eastern Bongo calf of the year.

A male, named Jax, was born to parents Bob and Juni on the morning of April 18. Jax is the eighth Bongo at the Zoo, and he is his father’s eighth offspring, and his mother’s ninth offspring.

Updates from visit today.
1. Few people. Not many wearing masks but really good distancing except for the restaurant in the Africa area.
2. Baby bongos and giraffes seen
3. First duiker sighting in around 20 visits.
4. New birds: Tawny frogmouth and a pigeon species (think green-pigeon species)IMG_20200807_131857_2.jpg

Pigeon species identified as Pink-necked green-pigeon. They had a baby recently. The zoo no longer holds Black-naped orioles. Other news: baby Emperor scorpions and Luzon bleeding-heart pigeons, a new Alligator snapping turtle and Yellow-footed tortoise. Don't know if World of Reptiles or the farm is open. The zoo's Avian Reproduction Center (not accessible breeding area for small Asian birds) currently has Luzon bleeding-heart pigeons, pink-necked green-pigeon, Crested wood-partridge, Collared finch-bill bulbul, Purple-tailed imperial-pigeon, and Black-naped fruit dove. Formerly also orioles, leafbirds, and White-crested laughingthrush.
 
Betty the Eastern bongo has passed away after suffering from an acute gastrointestinal illness. She was 15 years old and the oldest of the zoos bongos, having been born at the zoo in 2005. Betty was the dominant female of the herd and gave birth to eight calves of the years.
