Chester Zoo visit 13/2/10

Oh and the Turacos/Go Away Birds at the Arara Aviaries aswell, they were empty except for a Monal and a Crestless Fireback - and no one was signed. Not next for the chop are they, these aviaries?

Yes, sorry for the repost but what are these aviaries?

I think he's referring to the aviaries on the arara picnic lawn

That's right, I'm an older member and they will always be the rainbow aviaries to me. They used to be two much larger aviaries originally. One which was on the site of the shrubbery between the chimps and the lawn had a group of mixed small parrots housed in it. Can't remember what was kept in the other one near to RORA.

I popped into the zoo yesterday.
Asha was asleep and looked OK, if perhaps a bit bored.
Saw the new warty piglets by the bats.
Spent most time in the tropical house. The new Irradiated (sic) tortoise enclosure is enormous and potentially in need of more tortoises ;) The frog sections at the end were covered with black plastic, so no frogs spotted. IDs needed for some birds in there (see separate thread).
New iguana enclosures in Islands in Danger are looking pretty much complete and very nice. Is there still a young dragon in the small enclosure in there, or has he moved? He never seems to be visible.
Saw half a bush dog disappearing. It had moved by the time I finished watching the red-billed blue pie eyeing up some monal pheasant feathers (still attached to the monal!) for his nest, so I dismissed the bush dog as a hallucination.
Lots of wooing, cooing and nest-building happening in Europe on the Edge.
There's an all-white jackdaw amongst the flock that likes to hang out with the rheas.

I always see the bush dogs when I visit - the only time I didn't see them was when they had very young pups.
I saw the young male Komodo on saturday, for the first time in about 18 months though. He was sat on a ledge in the back right hand corner.

Mongoose mania is not yet complete. The marmots were not on show anywhere.
Good news about the mongooses, but do we know what has happened to the marmots yet? They've been one of the most popular adoption animals since way back (certainly back when they were in the paddocks of the west zoo) so it would seem a bit short-sighted to lose that revenue stream and have to explain to all the adopters that they can no longer see their charges.

With some escape-proofing the old otter enclosure would've made a good home for a small group.

Once again Im thanking you Bongorob, I had an Idea on the species yet was not sure, I had no Idea what a Monal was. Not Really A Bird Person, thanks again.
