Chester Zoo Visits Late July/August

No sign of the Duiker today, but on both visits I made then the little off-show area that it has [its bed] was closed off. Only saw one Okapi today (not sure which) but it looked as if it had access to both paddocks (both doors were open).

It has off-show places where the duiker can hide if needs be, so it appears you were just unlucky with your visit.

Plus is she was outside you would have not much chance seeing her unless she was close to the viewing areas.

I would also guess that you saw Dicky (the male) okapi. Hint for you the males have horns the females don't and as Chester only keep 1.1 at the moment it easy to tell the two apart.

I didn't see the head properly (hence why I couldn't tell :)).

Stuma was off show on Sunday. I'm a bit worried as ZL said the Giraffe house was closed on Friday due to 'a problem with one of the okapi', I know they were introduced last week so I'm worried there's been an issue. Purely speculation though.

I hope all is well :S. The okapi are one of my 'most want to see a baby at Chester' so I hope that this is still possible at some point.
It is somewhat annoying, because I saw a keeper feeding the giraffes (I don't know, but would assume she was the okapi keeper as well). I considered asking her where abouts the other okapi was but thought it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Update from today

The metal work (gates etc) in the Giraffe house is being re-painted so they are confined to just the front half of the house and paddock today and will probably be tomorrow as well.

Did not see Stuma the Okapi today and Dicky had access to both paddocks and the indoor on show area. Spoke to a keeper who said that she was just off show so we can stop writing her obituary for now. ;) Didn't get chance to ask what happend on Friday

Three visayan warty piglets (group in the cattle house) are confined to a sectiond off area of the outdoor exibit. Don't know how old they are but I would guess not much more than a few weeks. Sorry if this has already been posted

Nayan the elephant calf is progressing well.

Kinky Tail the female cheetah was on her own in the Yurt enclosure today whilst the three males (Burbah, Singa and Matrah) had the enclosure nearest to Anoa (where KT was until a week or two ago)

Didn't see the Red Panda cub again.

Ask any questions :)

I photographed them on the 23rd June, so we know they're older than that. They've been in that smaller annex since their birth.

I think they were born in the first week of June. I remember visiting on 9th June and the house was closed.

Well, I'm happy that we now have a confirmation that Stuma is just off-show and has not died.

Stuma does have an abcess under her chin which has been treated in the past so it is possible the reason she is ofshow is due to this. Im going to the zoo tomorrow evening for the Lazy Summer Evening and will try and find out some more info.

Cool, thank you very much :). I hope that she will be alright. Can't make the summer evening tomorrow but I'm going on Sunday, so if there is no news by Sunday morning I will ask if I see a keeper :).

One reason I was surprised it came up. Unfortunately however, it doesn't take much to start rumours on the Interweb.

Can we try to steer clear of the wild speculation please, it really doesn't help anyone.

Hehe, sorry :S. I was just a little worried about her since the 'incident' was mentioned and she has been off-show since this. Just glad she is alright :)

I guess you become attached to the animals at your local zoo, for me Thorn at Chester is the most beautiful creature I have ever seen, Sheba means alot to my childhood, I was even upset when Norman died.

I guess what I am trying to say is I understand why people become worried for animals at their local zoo. I will be visiting on Friday aswell, so if I see anything or find anything out anywhere in the zoo, will let you know!

Hehe, I was somewhat gutted when Patna died, but that is because he is an Indian Rhino (along with black rhinos and orangs, my fave at the zoo). I've only started following individuals recently (last year or so), but it is really difficult not to worry when you see that an animal is missing (for some reason, it is all to easy to forget [the more probable] options).

Also, thanks for trying to find things out :).

Apoligies, didnt mean it as speculation just a possibility as i know Stuma has had trouble with an abcess in the past. Thought i would mention this to try an stop speculation.

To avoid a 'panic scenario' on the Forum, in a case like this it is better to avoid the words 'died' or 'dead' even speculatively as it leads to such misinformation spreading- unless you have inside knowledge or real cause to think there is a strong possibility of this being the case.

Many animal houses have at least one offshow stall where an animal can be placed temporarily out of public view for whatever reason- so that it may appear to have disappeared.
