Chester Zoo Visits Winter

Some notes from my visit yesterday:

Thi is looking very big now, she seemed quite subdued and was spending most of her time with Sheba. Sithami and Sundara shared responsibilities of Nayan, and seemed to be having quite a good time as they trotted round the paddock in the afternoon.

Mongoose Mania has closed and its inhabitants moved off-show, as it appears an indoor viewing area is in construction. It is on the left hand side of the enclosure (if walking from tigers) and looks significantly larger than the old nest box.

The inhabitants of the aviary outside Tropical Realm have moved as there is construction work going on in the enclosure.

And finally, the Okapi were very close to mating, perhaps the closest I've seen them but Stuma still being slightly stubborn.

Adding some things:

We were watching the okapi for some time, I never saw any successful matings but things are progressing, and she is MUCH calmer than a few weeks ago. She was stood still in the corner, and Dicky tried mounting a few times, but I didn't see anything actually happen (mind you, was talking to a keeper for some time).

Emerald tree boa is in the corner viv in the Tropical Realm that has been vacant for some time.

I don't know if this is the case, however I THINK there is a superb fruit dove juvenille in the Realm of the Red Ape aviary with the Timor sparrows and the Chestnut-backed thrushes. (Photo attached, not the best pic I took, just chose one quickly from a thumbnail).

Also got a photo of the aviary development just outside the Tropical Realm (attached). For lechweoryx: No, it's the one that previously held the Sumatran laughingthrush.

Tuataras were as far from the burrow as I've ever seen, right in the corners of the enclosure.

The Rhinoceros hornbills in the Tropical Realm were being exceptionally vocal and one was bouncing up and down on a branch. Could this be a form of displaying?

Thi is still keeping us all waiting, was hoping I'd share a birthday but alas it was not to be :(.

Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Is that the macaw aviary? (the aviary which I have never seen enything in before).
No, as JR and ZG have said, it's the old tuatara enclosure, most recently home to the Sumatran laughingthrush. The roof is being replaced and the waterfall reclaimed, then the birds will be going back in. There is a pair in the old aviary on the Arara Lawn for anyone missing them.

Thi's due date was last Friday, 14th February.

Just a couple of notes from a short visit on the 15th...

The new African Wild Dog enclosure looks to be progressing nicely (from what I could see as most of the area is blocked off) The indoor house looked pretty much complete from the outside. Outdoor area still has a way to go but it looks on schedule for it's april opening :)

Spoke to one of the presenters who confirmed that they were expecting Thi's (Asian Elephants) calf to be born anytime now.

The stand off fencing that sourounds the canal by the Giraffe's and Giant Anteater has been replaced. The new fence borders the main path meaning that the bank is now inaccessiable and you can't get as close to anteaters as you once could (on the plus side though it means less chance of someone falling into the canal!)

Does anyone know when they are due to begin work on the Giant Otter's underwater viewing area?

Ask any questions

This only applies to people who actually see the anteaters.

The giant otters have been seen mating, so should the female be pregnant it'll have an impact on the development schedule.

The new stand-off barriers opposite the pudú and giant anteater have been there for some months now. I don't recall there ever being reports of people falling into the canal, although there are old photographs of people sitting on the edge dangling their feet into it.

Abit of news if you dont know Lily the baby Red Panda cub born to Lushui and Pali has been removed from the enclosure because its breeding season and will be offshow until its been decided were she'll go.

Still no babay Elephant as of todays visit, but the staff are not worried about it yet as Thi isn`t that far over due.
The baby Red Panda is still in the zoo but is being held off show until she moves in about 3 months time, she has been taken off-show so that the zoo can bred from the Red Panda again this year.
Also saw a couple of Speckled Pigeons mating so I guess the numbers in the Tropical Realm will increase still further!

I have some questions some of you may be able to answer:
What Species are they(apart from Philippine Crocodile's)in the Tropical Realm?
The Same question applies to Islands in danger(apart from Komodo Dragon's)
And how many Philippine Spotted Deer do Chester have?
Sorry to ask but this seemed like the only place to ask:)
