Vogelpark Avifauna Vogelpark Avifauna news

After 2 1/2 months at the nest the female Wreathed hornbill has left the nest. Together with her, also 2 young ones got out :) !

3 Asian woolly necked storks hatched.

Did visit Avifauna today ( together with my wife and @devilfish ) and here are some notes from this visit :
- the way along the pheasantery was closed ( not a clue why ? ) and therefor we missed quite a number of species and also the grave-yard for extinct bird-species was not reacheble :(.
- all the old parrot-parrakeet aviaries which were near the pheasantery have disappeared and are replaced by 2 big aviaries for birds ( parrots ) used in the bird-show which mean that a great number of species are not on display anymore :( !
- on the possitve site : there were 2 species of hummingbirds on display - 1 of each species :
Lesson's amazilia ( see Lesson's amazilia - Amazilia amazilia | ZooChat )
Rufous-throated sapphire ( see Rufous-throated sapphire - Hylocharis sapphirina | ZooChat )
- Young birds were also very few but in the Pantanal-hall we discovered some very young Brazilian teals and 2 halls further - the hall with only aviaries and no free-flying birds - a young Southern Sulawesi tarictic hornbill was still being fed by its father.

Are you positive about those hummingbird ID's? I saw the pictures of their signage in the gallery, but I think they may be incorrect.

Your first picture looks to me like the female fork-tailed woodnymph (Thalurania furcata) that has been there since 2012 (though perhaps moulting, as this new picture shows more ruffed white feathers on the wing?), and your second picture looks to me like an Amazilia hummingbird (Amazilia amazilia), of which the arrival has been shared on social media quite recently.
Neither of the two, to me, look much like Hylocharis sapphirina at all - though it would be wonderful if they still had that species!

Sad news about the parrots though! Seems like an odd change.

No, I just took the signage for correct without double-checking it so you could well be right. Will try to find-out more later Oke ?

@Vision : with the Lesson's amazilia I agree that I labeled the wrong picture with this name ( already changed it, with the other species I'm still not sure if it's the fork-tailed woodnymph or the ( as the sign mentioned ) rufous-throated sapphire....

Avifauna recieved a new male Crowned lemur from a France Zoo. The male which already lived at Avifauna will be send soon to an English collection.
