Looks like the Javanese variety ..., right?

Does this mean Antwerpen has gone out of that species and will focus on the Pilipinas species instead (or did they have a larger Javan mouse deer group as well)?
 
@Kifaru Bwana: It is indeed a Java mouse deer (sensu lato). Antwerp apparently sent 2 individuals (0.0.2) to Avifauna and according to zootierliste they only held 2 individuals in January but a pair so I do not know if that means they are getting rid of the species.
 
Hummingbirds are no longer on show, at least I didn't see any at my visit today. The former hummingbird enclosures are now in use for some passerines (red-legged honeycreeper, Brazilian and turqoise tanager) and fruit doves (the arena facing side of the building) and the inner enclosures of the species of "Nuboso" (vulture aviary facing side). Quite an irony that hummingbirds are replaced by a new section themed to represent the habitat in which I've seen the most species of hummingbird in the wild: the cloud forests. However, none of the inhabitans of "Nuboso" appear to be cloud forest species, but Amazonian...

Kiwi was a no-show, again. I've visited six zoos with kiwis, but only saw it once, in the Aquatic Bird House of the Bronx.

To end with a positive note: I saw my first Guianan cock-of-the-rock (both male and female).

Did you ask any zoo staff on the hummingbird?

You should go to Zoo Berlin again then, the Kiwi there are very showy in the new enclosure in the bird house.
 
There were no hummingbirds when we visited mid-June. The Kiwi was almost a no-show for us too, but we have connections (albeit very loose) and a keeper showed us the male they have on exhibit. He said they usually have the female on exhibit, and she is very showy. however, she was off-show sitting on eggs :-)
 
I'm not really fond of the way Avifauna is evolving with more and more mammal species en less and less bird species. At my first visit (2004), only red-necked wallabies were kept in the new Australian section. At this moment Avifauna keeps three species of lemur, four species of New World monkeys (with plans for adding lion tamarins to "Nuboso"), Brazilian cavy, lesser mouse-deer and red panda.

"Nuboso" is a good example: instead of creating a real cloud forest area with for example quetzals, cotingas (bell bird, umbrella bird, cock-of-the-rock) and hummingbirds, it's a walkthrough area with monkeys and some larger bird species. Sure, the current setup would be more appealing for the general visitors and cheaper to construct and to maintain compared to a climate controlled hall with lush vegetation and "just" birds, but I have higher expectations of the third-largest bird park in the world.

No, very few staff around yesterday, only those involved in the birds of prey show and the lorikeet feeding.

Good to know, but I will at least wait until the works on the Raubtierhaus and the Brehmhaus are finished before I revisit Berlin.

In North Island Brown Kiwi, it is the male which incubates.
 
After a break of more then a year I visited Avifauna yesterday and here some notes and observations from this visit :
- In the 4th section of the Tropical Hall - the one with aviaries - a Magpie shrike is on display, a species for which Avifauna is not mentioned on Zootierliste ( photo see Magpie shrike - ZooChat )
- In the 3th section of the Tropical Hall ( the "African"part ) I discovered at least 1 Emerald starling. Its mentioned already on Zootierliste but had never seen it myself during my previous visits ( photo see Emerald starling - ZooChat )
- In the row of Hornbill-aviaries near the big lake I saw a pair of Crestless fireback pheasants. They were not signed and I had not seen them on previous visits ( photos see Malayan crestless fireback - female - ZooChat and Malayan crestless fireback - male - ZooChat )
- Silvery-cheeked hornbill female was sealed into the nest-barrel and was fed by the male several times ( photo see Silvery-cheeked hornbill sealed in the nest - ZooChat )
- Southern Sulawesi hornbill female also sealed into the nestbox and could clearly heared ( photo see Southern Sulawesei tarictic hornbill sealed in the nest - ZooChat )
- In the Pantanal-section of the Tropical Hall a small group of Green-cheeked conures found a new home ( see Green-cheeked conure - ZooChat )
- Also was not able to find any hummingbirds anymore :(
- In the small "between"section between the Philippine and Pantanal-sections of the Tropical Hall a female Palawan peacock pheasant was taking care of her single chick ( see Palawan peacock-pheasant chick - ZooChat )
- In one of the indoor-enclosures of Nuboso a Crested seriema was on the nest ( see Crested seriema at the nest - ZooChat )
- The small house which was first used as some kind of museum has been changed into a Kiwi-raising house. Didn't see the chick(s? ) myself but on a monitor small movies of this special breeding are shown ( see Kiwi raising house - ZooChat )
- In the Pantanal-section of the Tropical Hall 2 small unsigned turtles found a new home, the first reptiles I've seen at Avifauna ( see Turtle ID - ZooChat )
- In Nuboso a new unidentified finch / weaver-like bird ( see Bird ID - ZooChat )
- In the Africa-section of the Tropical House a new unidentified robin / redstart like bird ( see Bird ID - ZooChat
- European crane sat on the nest ( see European crane at the nest - ZooChat )
- Afther a longer break the Great blue touracos had raised a chick again. Saw both parents and the about 5 weeks old young.
 
Hornbill-news 2019 :

- 1 Silvery-cheeked hornbill raised succesfully
- Great Indian hornbill female Daya which used to fligh in the Bird-show died :(
- A female Tarictic hornbill died :(
 
A staffmember told me yesterday one of their Red Pandas escaped yesterday morning and that they have not found him yet. He did an escape attempt last week aswell, but got caught.
