Vogelpark Avifauna Vogelpark Avifauna news

According to ZTL, avifauna no longer hold black-necked stilts (formerly in the Cuba aviary). Though it doesn't mention where they went

Some news from the Dutch zoo magazine "De Harpij":

- 1.2 palawan hornbills have arrived from Wroclaw. These will later be paired with unrelated animals.
- The 1.0 red panda died.
- From the Apenheul 0.2 red howler monkeys arrived for the island Nuboso.

Last week the Cuba aviary reopened. Due to the current outbreak of bird flu visitors are now separated by an additional net-like structure within the aviary to prevent direct contact between visitors and birds.

Recently a female Victoria crowned-pigeon (Goura victoria) that hatched at the zoo last year was send to "Copenhagen Aquarium", where she was paired with a male. I persume that the "Copenhagen Aquarium" is Den Blå Planet Aquarium, which according to ZTL already has this species.

Vogelpark Avifauna is currently building a South American pampa area. This will be built on the site of the former 'uilenberg'. It is known that the following species will be housed in this area: Vicuña, Lesser rhea, Patagonian mara, Southern screamer and Giant anteater. The enclosure for the Patagonian mara will be a walk-through enclosure.

2 rare vulture-chicks arrived from Rotterdam Zoo. At Rotterdam the Rüppel's vulture and the White-headed vulture normaly had to be handraised but because both species had also nests in Avifauna ( both with infertile eggs ) the eggs were exchanged with the chicks which now can be raised naturaly by birds of their own species :).

Recently female Northern brown kiwi (Apteryx mantelli) Whina laid 2 eggs! The first is expected to hatch at the end of May! Whina arrived 2 years ago from America while her partner "Tuatahi" hatched in Avifauna 3,5 years ago.

Sadly one the eggs turned out to be unfertilised, hopefully the other egg will hatch in July.

Yesterday the zoo celebrated its 72nd birthday!

I have been to all the European zoos with kiwis and have never been able to see one. Perhaps it would be interesting to return to Avifauna...

Even in the nocturnal exhibit at Avifauna you would have to be quite lucky to see one, but perhaps it would be the best chance.

I stayed in the Avifauna Hotel for a few days during the summer vacation. Gave me my best chance of seeing them, and even then it was difficult

Honestly they are always well visible, however often in the back. Though they sit still too which makes it hard!
