Walrus currently in captivity

wait how would they eat actual meat their mouths are designed to eat shellfish and molluscs iirc
Walrus have extremely strong lips. They just sucked the blubber away from the body and consumed meat only if it was attached to it.
Indeed. As the article stated:-

"....The walrus' extraordinary oral suction is well documented and this is probably the means by which chunks of viscera are torn out of the carcass. Based on our examinations, walruses consume principally the hide and blubber of seals and ingest very little skeletal muscle and bone...."

The Indianapolis Zoo’s walrus’ are in SWO. They are getting walrus (don’t know if it is Aku/Ginger or wild), renovations are present, I don’t know when they will finish. They have boarded the whole habitat up.

It's been a while since we've last had a population overview posted and there's been a lot of changes (since this update on 2021-Jul-29, just two years ago, the population has reduced by 16 [0.9.7]). Forgive me for the messy formatting, and I also apologize for the lack of detail:

One thing I somehow forgot to include -- this facility closed in November 2022, and all of the animals were transferred out in December '22 and January '23. I've read that most of the animals went to Moscow (there are two confirmed at Moskvarium), though one went to Delfiniya, returning an animal owned by them.

I haven't seen any confirmation about what happened to their bull walrus, Saltan, so if anyone knows please do chime in! I meant to add a note about him being unknown status currently in the original post but forgot, so sorry about that oversight

EDIT: While looking around for Saltan I saw that Gelendzhik has a walrus again! I'm assuming Lyalechka from Utrish, possibly one or both of the other girls as well, will be looking into that

Great work csartie! I greatly appreciate the effort you've put into this list. Last I heard Saltan had been transferred to an unknown facility in Russia but I'm not 100% which institution. Chimelong also has 6 males walrus leaving their current population at 6.4.4 with a minimum of 14 total walrus. Quite the large herd!

A few updates from 2024 that have not been mentioned yet:

0.1 Chouchou was transferred from SeaWorld San Diego to SeaWorld Orlando

0.1 Aurora passed away on April 12 at SeaWorld Orlando

0.1 Kulusiq passed away on April 21 at SeaWorld San Diego

1.0 Aku and 0.1 Ginger were transferred from SeaWorld Orlando to the Indianapolis Zoo

0.1 Ninotska was transferred from Pairi Daiza to Tierpark Hagenbeck

0.1 Himawari was transferred from Ise Sea Paradise to Minamichita Beach Land on February 28 and then back to Ise Sea Paradise on April 19 for a breeding loan.

0.1 Ichiko was born on April 15 to parents Pou and Izumi at Oita Marine Palace Aquarium.

1.0 Not named was born on May 14 to parents Pou and Bubu at Oita Marine Palace Aquarium but passed away the next day.

0.1 Not named was born on June 16 to parents Kikku and Tanpopo at Ise Sea Paradise but passed away on June 23.

  • animals currently on temporary breeding loans only count towards their home facility

Ninotska is back at Pairi Daiza. Seems very promising to me that she returned before the 2025 breeding season — I honestly thought she might have been staying at Hagenbeck a little more long-term after they lost Dyna. It feels like 2025 might just be a big year for all of the European walrus holders!

I presumed she was sent to Hamburg for breeding? But why has she come back so soon or is there a different reason behind the move?

She was there over the entire 2024 breeding season, so she's actually been there quite a while!

If I were to guess, they held her long enough to determine a viable pregnancy and decide whether or not to return her to Pairi Daiza to give birth in 2025 or remain with Odin for the upcoming season. This is similar to what they did with Tania — she returned in December of 2020 and gave birth to Floki in May of 2021.

  • 0.1 Barya was transferred from Aqua Planet Jeju to Aqua Planet Ilsan on February 25th, 2025. Ilsan is now the only remaining holder in South Korea.
  • 0.1 Tanpopo is being transferred from Minamichita Beach Land to Ise Sea Paradise on March 4th, 2025.
Some other updates I don't think have been shared here...
  • Chimelong Ocean Kingdom's 0.1 Kleo is pregnant and due in the 2025 birthing season
  • Umitamago's 0.1 Mii returned to Toba Aquarium on January 14th, 2025 for breeding
Lots going on for this species across Asia
