West Country Peregrinations

I take it the other remaining Barbary Sheep all died off ?

".......five go-old rings, four Caucasian Tur, three Barbary Sheep, two Takin Bros, and a ........"

Here are two of the three Barbary Sheep with the Tur:

Shame if they are getting the boot, or rather the hoof!
Though I suppose they could then concentrate on the Tur, if that is the plan ?

(When I get time, I will find that photo of the "other" Barbary Sheep enclosure I was also talking about from past years , which probably led to some confusion.);)

Here it is at last, I am not going mad! Dated 1994.

Thanks for the information. My memories of the zoo prior to the big redevelopment are a bit hazy.

It was quite an impressive 'mountain'!

I'm very glad I stumbled on this thread as, stuck here in Jordan at the moment, I'm working on a cunning plan to get out by the end of September and then do a zoo trip across the south of England, i.e., from Canterbury to Bristol. I have collated a list of all the zoos/wildlife parks in this part of England and, as obviously I can't visit them all, I was going through the list deleting those that I don't think I will want to visit. So thanks Shorts for your reviews in your OP as that has helped me greatly in deciding what to visit in SW England.

Glad to be of some assistance. Whenever I holiday in the West Country it's always a matter of deciding which collections to leave out. :) I hope you enjoy your visits.

It was quite a good- sized "mountain" in an otherwise tiny enclosure.

I believe this featured on one of those original Paignton Zoo programmes, that I can`t remember the name of, when they had to catch the Barbary Sheep up, again for some reason that I can`t remember.......er.....who am I......????????

'The Zoo Keepers'?

Ah, I'd thought they were catching them up in the old Giraffe exhibit, but they must have been doing it to move them from this one into that one. That would be logical as the first series did feature the Elephants being walked to the new house and the bit where the Giraffes were being moved and their keeper had a cold must have been in the first series too. "The Zoo Keepers" remains my favourite ever zoo reality programme even though there was a bit of a continuity issue when Humphrey the camel was euthanised (I am sure a well-known Paignton keeper had not paused for a hair cut when he was supposed to be rushing to the Camel House).
