Although isnt there a kind of barrier at longleat to keep the hippos going up to the part of the lake where the boats dock? I suppose there would have to be, would be chaos if not. As far as i remember the sealions can get over the barrier to the hippos side, because they are regularly seen sitting on top of ther hippos!

There is no barrier to seperate the Hippos from sealion or boats.

As hippos cannot climb anything that is Vertical they are kept of everywhere that they have used vertical sides. The hippos can be seen most nights up near the boats.

There is a barrier to seperate the pelicans thou.

how are the hippo's at longelat stopped from accessing the sea lion beach?

and ie finally found out the extra cheetah came form a breeding facility in south africa by looking at the website (which would of been the most sensible place to look:rolleyes:)

I don't think they are, they could go on there if they wanted.

Isn't the sealion beach seperated by big metal bars which sealions can swim through, but they are placed too narrow for a hippo to swim through, or am i imagining things? :p

It's been a while since i've watched an Animal Park with the sealions on...

oh yeah, i new there was some form of barrier, I kind of forgot about the pelicans!

I think you are correct Jimmy about the Sealion beach, there is a kind of metal fence that juts out into the water in front of the beach.

Sorry about being a bit late on the issue but I just want to say that Werribee has a hippo pool that is cleaned by a reed bed and although it isn't crystal clear, it is clearer most of the dams on our farm.

Actually no it isn't. There is a house next to sealion beach which I gather is the hippo/sealion house if they need to sperate a sick animal which has fencing out into the water. However sealion beach is based on the concept that Hippos cannot climb anything vertical, therefore the edge of the beach is a sheer face allowing the sealions to access it but not the Hippos.

I have to say im REALLY not a fan of West Midlands. I was there a few years ago and i really didnt like it. Don't get me wrong ther are some good areas to the park but i think it should be managed in a totally different way

Mainly i think is way too comerciallised with emphasis on 'special' animals such as white tigers, white lions which in my mind have no conservation value, just crowd pullers. Also personally i don't like it when rides are put as part of a zoo and just compare animal collections as 'amusements/entertainment'. It would be a great plcae if the amusement area was given over to the animals, the hippo pool was GREATLY improved and emphasise was not placed on white animals, but rare or unusual animals displayed as close to there natural state as possible.

again the rides are a "crowd-puller" its a similar thing to chessington and flamingo land

On a positive note , the WMSP web-site reports that they have raised over 20,000 euros for the EAZA 'Year of the Frog' campaign . One of only 3 European collections to date raising this much .

I doubt they did state the oher collections, but do you know which ones they were?

I have read an article recently, that named three Zoos who raised over 20000 EUR for this campaign: Chester, Munster and Prague.
