What are your interests besides Zoos/Animals?

Mine
  • Geography/maps
  • Working out
  • RuPaul's Drag Race
  • Youtube (I love video essays)
  • Chorus/singing
  • Theater
  • Music (My favorites to the Smiths, the Strokes, the Cocteau Twins, Radiohead, Slowdive, and Beach House)
  • Bike riding
  • Thrift shopping
  • Eating at good restaurants

I love music. I can't sing for the life of me (though I enjoy it, when no one else can possibly hear me, haha).
I used to play accordeon (can't believe I'm willing to say that out loud) when I was 11-14 and then I went on to acoustic guitar & bass.
I haven't played in years, due to life, and not really wanting to on my own anymore.
And I've lost a lot of patience along the way with getting older, and when I can't get the chord right I give up very easily.
Love going to concerts, though the past few years going has massively reduced.
Saw Shania Twain twice past September though, so that was great.
I get a lot out of music, it helps me through rough times.

I also really love musicals. Lion King, Come From Away, Prince of Egypt are my favorites. Seen a few others.
And next on the list is Little Big Things & Mrs Doubtfire (both in London).
I don't tend to go and see lots of different ones, I'm a very odd person (lol), if I like a show enough, I will go see it multiple times. I saw Come From Away 7 times (which isn't a lot if you look at some people who went 150 times during it's 4 year-run in London).

And Disney.
I used to have an annual pass for Disneyland Paris, but due to covid and moving to England that just wasn't an option anymore.
I've also been to Disneyland Resort and Disney World. A Disney Cruise would be the absolute dream.

Over the years, my interests have changed a lot, but my interest in zoos and animals has always been there, often not my main focus, but always on my mind to some extent. Right now, I am going through a football phase of sorts, as a massive Crystal Palace fan, and I have a feeling that this interest will last me for quite some time, but it will never overtake zoos as my priority, I don't think. Sadly, as this interest has developed so late into my life, I never got to play at a young age, and as such, really aren't that good at it, but as far as watching it goes, it is the closest contender to zoos and animals for my biggest interest.

I also love bike rides, especially in foreign countries, but often that is because I find ways to tie it into zoos - earlier this year, I cycled 500 kilometres in just six days along the river Elbe in Germany, which was fun in and of itself, but more so because it brought me where I needed to be to visit Tierpark Hagenbeck and Zoo Magdeburg. I plan on continuing this trip next year, which will bring me to Prague, and possibly Zoo Dresden as well. As of a trip to Austria in January, skiing is also developing into an interest of mine, although given how expensive proper skiing holidays are, I will have to settle for the all-indoor slopes at Milton Keynes for the time being.

On the topic of foreign holidays, learning foreign languages is always fun, especially when I am using zoo guidebooks or continental football to help me out! Currently learning German, Dutch and French, although struggling to do all three at once and may have to pick one to focus on at a time. And, although it sort of counts as animals, dinosaurs fascinate me, especially the giant sauropods - now that the Natural History Museum in London has a skeleton of Patagotitan mayorum on temporary display, I could spend hours in that room in awe at it. If only it could be permanent!

Besides animals, my other interests are:

  • Rock music (don't like any of that modern stuff)
  • Drawing
  • Painting (especially animals)
  • Going outdoors
  • Movies (I have an IMDb account)
  • Anime/Cartoons
  • Watching YouTube videos
  • Genres (Sci-fi, comedy, action, adventure, fantasy)

Just a pity it's such a trek (and an expensive one) to get to London from my neck of the woods; long before I was ever interested in zoological collections, nature, history or walking in the countryside, my first (and still very much abiding) passion was always palaeontology.... so I'd love to see that skeleton.

My first visit to the Museum fur Naturkunde in Berlin, documented in one of my travel threads from several years back, was practically a pilgrimage of sorts, considering the fact it meant seeing the famous Giraffatitan brancai skeleton with my own eyes having read about it throughout my childhood.

I love this thread!

- I love building lego and getting a new set feels like Christmas day to me
- Im an avid baker/chef when i'm feeling well enough and love learning new things
- Gaming. I used to play PC but that broke down so went to Xbox, now saving for a nice gaming PC. I have enjoyed Planet zoo, God of war, Assassins creed, Call of Duty, Unpacking, Sims, House Flipper Simulator and many many more!
- Arts and Craft. I usually have a new focus point every few months but I have thoroughly enjoyed clay, scrapbooking and journaling, paint by numbers (adult version ofcourse haha), Diamond dots, mosaics and miniature house building.
- Photography which unfortunately I can only do with my phone nowadays as my disabilities interfere with using my proper DSLR but I work with what I can!

Besides zoos of course my interests are
- Collecting - especially extant and extinct animal models (I've got so many dinosaurs :p) also fossils, nature DVDs
- Fantasy - mainly the works of Tolkien and the amazing movies which are associated but also the Dark Crystal

Here are mine:
  • Classical music. I don't have a lot of prior knowledge but I really enjoy it, it is one of the few things in life that bring me joy. Romantic era symphonies and operas are my favorite.
  • Language learning
  • History and geopolitics
  • Reading... I am a very slow reader, and will often leave books unfinished for months (or years!) before I pick them up, but still.
  • Ghibli movies
  • Series
  • Swimming. Normally I hate sports but I have managed to keep this habit over the years.
  • Wandering around in the city

I'd say nowadays my main interests are rock/metal music, cinema, gaming (though nowhere near as much as I used to), and fashion.

I used to be quite into anime, drawing, and collecting all kinds of things but haven't really done any of those seriously for years now.

I've been trying to pick up reading more, I never really read much fiction growing up and am trying to appreciate sinking into a good book :D but usually my attention diverts elsewhere.

You guys have interests besides animals? :p

For real though, I do my fair share of arts and crafts, mostly origami and drawing with the occasional dabble in watercolours. I also make mods for the game Megaquarium.

Besides zoos and animals? Hmm...
  • Photography
  • Postcrossing and penpalling, since it's very relaxing and therapeutic in my opinion. I like to sit down, choose the postcard, choose the stamps, stickers, washi and other decorations, then write the message about literally whatever to a complete stranger.
  • Reading! I like reading books, usually fiction. Also manga.
  • Drawing. I actually studied fine arts for 4 years in highschool, but I soon found out I really don't want to take part in the art community. I hated studying art, I didn't like that you're supposed to make what teachers want you to, not what you want. My biggest issue was that my favorite technique, the colored pencils, are looked down by most.
  • Watching anime
  • Tea! I'm a huge tea lover and I love preparing my tea in the gong fu style. I also enjoy going to tea houses. There are actually many in Czechia.
  • Plushies
