3 left and one of the places I stayed in Bolivia sometimes sees Short-eared Dog, but no luck. I also just noticed Joel Sartore had photographed a captive Short-eared Dog in Peru. Was too late to add onto my recent South America trip- hopefully it sticks around. The two Asian species shouldn't be too difficult to at least find wild, and I think are each kept captive currently.

My list isn't as impressive, but here it goes.
  • African Wild Dog (Lycaon pictus)
  • Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)
  • Bat-eared Fox (Otocyon megalotis)
  • Coyote (Canis latrans)
  • Dhole (Cuon alpinus)
  • Dingo (Canis familiaris dingo)
  • Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda)
  • Gray Wolf (Canis lupus)
  • Grey Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) (Wild only)
  • Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus)
  • Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)
  • Red Wolf (Canis rufus)
The Red Wolf is the most common Canid I have seen in zoos, having visited 6 facilities holding them (I live in NC, so this is hardly surprising). The Grey Fox is the only Canid I have seen in the wild, and also the only one I haven't seen in a zoo.

Here's my list:

Species in bold are ones I've seen in both the wild and captivity. I have seen no species exclusively in the wild.

1. Gray Wolf (also includes Domestic Dog, Dingo, and New Guinea Singing Dog)
2. Red Wolf
3. Coyote
4. African Wild Dog
5. Dhole
6. Maned Wolf
7. Common Raccoon Dog
8. Red Fox
9. Arctic Fox
10. Fennec Fox
11. Gray Fox
12. Bat-Eared Fox

The answer is simple. Whether its your local zoo, the wild, or your house, what canids have you seen?

My list:

Arctic Fox
Fennec Fox
Pale Fox
Grey Fox
Bat-Eared Fox
Raccoon Dog
Bush Dog
Maned Wolf
African Painted Dog
