What would you like to see in the UK?

Re Paignton Echidnas - quote from keeper in 2007 -

"The two animals that we currently have came to us from Bristol Zoo in 1993 and both were recorded as wild born animals one of unknown location and the other as Australia, so not a great deal of use to us. We think that we have a male and a female but this is based purely on size which is nots necessarily a reliable indicator."

I regularly see one of the echidnas out and about (located next to the Red Pandas in the older part of the zoo) and am pretty sure that they still have a second.[/QUOTE

After a little bit more research isis says they have 1:0 but the one they have left is a female

I would love to see me rodent species represented. Other than the usual Capybara, Agouti and Mara (then of course the kids zoo style Guinea Pigs etc).

I'd love to see:
Greenish Acuchy
Lowland and Mountain Paca (isn't there a few at IoW's Amazon World?)
Afghan Mouse-like Hamsters
Giant Rats
Jird's of any type :P
Spiny Mice
Plains Viscacha
Mole Rats
Gundi
Marsh Cane Rat
Coypu
Curou
Desmarest's Hutia
Small Five Toed Jerboa (all types of Jerboa xD)
Elephant Eared Shrew/Round Eared Sengi again, all types of Elephant Shrew.

And I demand more awareness for Syrian Hamsters :P

Desmarests hutia can be found at colchester and there are some elephant shrews in various zoo's eg. RSCC. Paca can be found at newquay zoo. Gundi can be found at various zoos

Still believe we need more :P I love Rodents I think they're some of the most underrated species in the world. I believe Marwell used to have Elephent Eared Shrews, but they were replaced with Spiny Mice. I've never see Paca or Gundi, so I'll have to be on the look out then.

kulan
giant eland
gerenuk
Cape hartebeest
bontebok
impala
royal antelope
And as it stands musk oxen, but soon, very soon, and bring back the Rocky mountain goats.
And for birds, kiwi, shoebill and kagu, as well as harpy eagle, inspired after watching the excellent natural world on BBC2, stunning bird.

Giant Panda 100%. Are there current plans for any UK Zoo to get them? I read somewhere that Edinburgh was planning but not sure what came of that.

thought edinburgh had shoebill

Green acouchy are still at Amazon World. They also seem to have acquired another 3 Lowland Paca, making a group of 5.

Lakeland Wildlife Oasis list on ISIS as having a Short-eared elephant shrew.

Hamerton don't list on ISIS, but have plains viscachas.

not to be pedantic or anything, but you know that elephant shrews aren't rodents right?

Hamerton have Northern Mountain Viscachas (Lagidium peruanum). I've only seen Plains Viscachas (Lagostomus maximus) at Amazon World, UK-wise, not sure if they're still there.

EDIT: As an aside, the viscacha that lived in the old Small Mammal House at Chester in the 1990s was a different species again - Southern Mountain Vischaca (Lagidium viscaccia).

am 99% sure i seen shoebill at edinburgh last year in the new bit across from the wild african dogs and am sure i have seen them on other sites as well

They had marabou storks until recently and the hamerkop are in that aviary too along with crowned cranes. No shoebills though unfortunately.

Giant panda, impala, cock of the rock, koala, wolverine & gundi have all turned up over the last few years with Thomson's gazelle, spotted cuscus, bear cuscus and tarsier coming and going
(amongst many others).
As i have said in the past, i wish more collections would take a more active interest the wild sheep & goat families, with our climate, most species would make an ideal outdoor exhibit.
Someone please bring back bear cuscus.

Are there really no tinamous or trumpeters there anymore?

Elegant crested tinamou and grey-winged trumpeters both on show at Paignton. Zootierliste also says there are trumpeters at Exmoor, Hayle and Birdworld, although I haven't visited any of those places recently.

There's definitely tinamou at Paignton, elegant crested found in the desert house.

As for (sub)species I'd like to see over here:-
Iberian lynx
Japan leopard
marbled polecat
either grison species
Indian grey mongoose
any linsang species
sea otter
kulan
wombat
bear cuscus
New Guinea echidna
harpy eagle
shoebill
dwarf cassowary
any bird of paradise species

And plenty of others... ;)

Oops, me and Gentle Lemur cross posted.

Thought I would do a proper run-through of how things have changed - or not - regarding the species mentioned in this thread so far.....

We have gained - and lost - the following:

Thomson's Gazelle

We have gained and retained the following:

Giant Panda

musk oxen
kiwi

We already *had* the following and have retained them:

Asiatic Black Bear

Lowland Paca
Plains Viscacha

We already *had* the following but have since lost them:

Greenish Acuchy
Mountain Paca

We already *had* the following, have since lost them and have now regained them:

Gundi
Desmarest's Hutia
Elephant Eared Shrew/Round Eared Sengi
