Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu At The Cincinnati Zoo? - 2013

Any hoofed stock on site for the African Savannah yet?

Are you asking for the list or if there are any at the zoo right now? Currently the African Plains section isn't exactly entirely complete. The left fence side still needs work and I don't think the off exhibit area has been built yet.

Updates:
-Bourke's Parakeets (old species) were added to the Australasia atrium in Wings of the World.
-The left Blue-breasted Kingfisher exhibit window was covered up with newspapers. There was a sign saying, 'Guam Kingfisher Coming Soon'. The bottom left was not covered up however, so I got curious and stuck my camera down there, pointed up, and it turns out the Guam Kingfisher is already in there.
-The Vietnamese Centipede (old but still sort of new) replaced the Vinegaroon
-A Magnificent Flower Beetle (old species) is in the old Vietnamese Centipede exhibit.
-The Salmon-pink Birdeater (old species) replaced the Giant Cockroaches
-Blatchley's Walkingsticks (new) replaced the Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers
-The zoo gave us a preview of the African Plains exhibit by placing Christmas light figures of zebras, jumping gazelles, and lions throughout the entire yard.
-A Crocodile Monitor replaced the Ornate Monitor in the Reptile House. The other Croc monitor is still in Dragons!
-Green Basilisks were added to the Knight Anole exhibit in Manatee Springs
-The Florida Pine Snake was temporarily taken off exhibit.
-A Marine Toad from the Discovery Forest replaced the Florida Marsh Snake.

The zoo is saying 'They Want a Hippo for Christmas', and I'm wondering how many people think the zoo is expecting to get one this month.

Im wondering if there trying to get the female who used to be at Topeka?

From the Topeka Zoo press release, it seems like the female hippo has left or is really close in leaving, so my guess is that she will not go to Cincy. Unless Cincy has a holding area where she could stay until the exhibit is ready?

I honestly don't think Cincy is ready to hold hippos at all! At least not in the exhibit size they have now! I mean, based on their plans they will have to start out with 1.3 and then they plan on a calf! They're enclosure cannot hold that in any which way!

The zoo doesn't even have a hippo exhibit built, in fact they haven't even started.

Why do they need to start out with 4?

Well it's my understanding that the AZA is moving more towards the same three females per collection rule that they have with elephants and if Cincy wants a calf, they'll need a male. Unless they want to try AI with another species.

Just found out that the new thinking is now four-eight hippos per zoo! So Cincy would at least need either 2.3 or 1.4 hippos!

An article on WCPO about the hippo campaign says that zoo workers have said that meerkats will be part of Africa as well. They were in the original plans, but overtime it became a rumor and then the idea was most likely forgotten when the new Africa map came out.
