Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden What's Gnu at the Cincinnati Zoo - 2014

New updates from my first visit of 2014.

World of the Insect
-The Brown Recluse Spider replaced the Vinegaroon.
-Bat Cave Crockroaches were moved into old recluse spider exhibit.
-Every fact and other words were scraped from the walls and replaced with dry wall.
-The Butterfly Rainforest name was changed to the Butterfly Aviary.

Rhino Reserve
-Mac and his daughter, Stevie were moved to the Houston Zoo but Cincy received three new bongos that are one and half years-old.

Jungle Trails
-The Black-casqed Hornbills may have been taken off exhibit.

Wildlife Canyon
-Bogart (Bactrian Camel) has been transferred to the Chahinkapa Zoo.

Children's Zoo
-Santos has been taken out of the Nursery. However, the first pen has been refilled with hay, possibly making this his new future home.

Wings of the World
-The Barred Owl from Wolf Woods was moved to the outdoor cage for the rest of winter.
-The last Blue-breasted Kingfisher has been removed.

Africa
-The walls of the African Wild Dog exhibit have been constructed. They are 25 feet tall all around and are concrete.

Mystery
-Looks like Zoo Babies came a little early so look in the gallery to see what was recently born ;)

The following photo should show you what a juvenile Smew looks like:

It also demonstrates why in Ornitholigical circles the immatures and adult females are referred to as 'Redheads'.

I always look on this thread for any update on the Sumatran rhinos, but there seems to have been a shutdown on news again, since the much publicised announcement of their considered intention of having to mate the brother and sister together. That was over six months ago now. Any further developments apparent?

Once again... nothing. But I still don't see why they would announce that type of news.

Only in so much as they announced the intention of doing it very publicly. So I wondered if they might therefore announce if they are actually doing it, but I guess if they are they might wait for an actual pregnancy before another announcement.

But I imagine a 'zoo regular' might become aware if they are being put together or not.;)

Ah then why didn't you just say so? ;) Out of all my visits from July to August I never saw them once in the same yard. There's no telling now if they are kept together periodically and interact in the same holding den because of the cold weather but that sounds like something any zoo would do at this point.

I did say so- as above..;)

They certainly wouldn't keep them together indoors if they didn't want to breed them together, also for Rhinos generally indoor introductions aren't the norm due to lack of space/possible injury.

I'll contact Cincinatti direct to see if I can find out more.

Did they ever say where they was getting the wild dogs from and what happend to the female lion that was going on exhibit with John

I do not know how reliable this report is but thought I would share it with you. Tam an adult male Sumatran Rhino is to be sent to Cincinnati to mate with Suci within 6 months if a wild female photo traps have seen cannot be captured.

Sabah rhinos headed for US zoo on loan | Daily Express Newspaper Online, Sabah, Malaysia.

I'm probably reading too much into the heading, but it does say "rhinos" as in plural. Interesting. I'm going to be pretty shocked if they get even one.

Ya I purposely ignored the plural. It only mentioned Tam by name. It could be a translation accident. However one breeding pair does not save a species, especially a single offspring species with a long pregancy.

Still it goes on....still more delay in so much as they are allowing another six(?) months to try and trap this female, so there's still no guarantee that Kertam(Tam) will go to Cinci, though it does sound as if the political red tape surrounding such a transfer has been broken through. Meantime Suci is already approaching ten years old. It appears they have now delayed on the proposed Harapan/Suci mating on the basis of this possiblity becoming a reality.
