had a brief visit to whipsnade today went in the discovery centre and the turtles in the ark had been moved offshow for a while . the burmese python exhibit by the crocs is empty and being redone as is the chameleon exhibit and the spiny hill turtle exhibit by the matamata

saw all 3 gaur and only one amur tiger female im guessing male didnt seem to be out . the deer drive through has got some field shelters in it .

saw the kudu and both baby hippos which were indoors at the time also saw some sleepy lions and cheetah as well as the red river hog and the vicuna as well as the scimater horned oryx and waterbuck and the white rhino

hullabazoo looked good all finished now and looks like it has a path round the back enabling guests to get closer to the animals and a window looking out into the yard area .

feel free to ask questions and il do my best to answer

Plans are currently underway to build a new open indoor facility in 2014 to accommodate the growing herd and to provide an improved area for the cows and young. This will add to an already comprehensive facility with over 20 acres of grass paddocks, a bull paddock, an all weather sand-yard complex and indoor stables for the cows and young and the breeding bull.
I saw this in a help wanted ad posted on the EMA website.

Are any of the cows currently expecting? Aziza, Kaylee, and Karishma all seem to be candidates at this point.

Interesting news. Do 'Mya' or 'Lucha(sp?)' not breed? I know 'Mya' killed a keeper at ZSL London but I didn't know she hasn't/won't breed.

What was the vicuña situation? Was it one individual in the bongo house as was mentioned a while ago in the 2012 thread or was there anything new?

just seen on facebook a guest fekt fobbed off by zsl as she went twice on a visit and the giraffe house was shut once they put down to a vet op and the 2nd time no response made by zsl but apparently their were electric fans going in their or near there

Not much news:

New male tiger Botzman has been getting access periodically to the main enclosure. Hopefully introductions with Anastasia will go smoothly when it comes to it :)

Baby gaur and Indian rhino are both doing well. All four gaur are spending the daytime together now and are getting along well. When I looked into one of the stalls just the baby and Mohan the male were in there at that moment - he's a good dad!

How old is Anastasia? If she is still of breeding age what would be the need to take Tschuna from Dudley?

Anastatia was one of the last 2 Tigers to be born at Whipsnade I believe, which from memorary means she must be getting on a bit now, last I heard the plan was still move Dudleys Amur as soon as anything happened to Anastatia!

Yep she will be 12 this year. Anyone know what the oldest recorded age a tiger has given birth at was? Botzman and Ana seem to have fallen in love through the fence so that is a good sign. Will report any news tomorrow :)

Had a very brief visit yesterday (wasn't prepared for the snow!) and most of the animals were being very sensible and sheltering from the weather! Passage thru Asia has a yurt in the car park halfway through, not sure what they are going to be using it for and the best thing was the cutest baby yak wandering around! born on Friday apparently according to a keeper I spoke to at the rhinos. Baby rhino was charging in and out of the house and the baby eles were having fun with cardboard boxes!

OK, thanks for the info, I was selfishly hoping she was younger so Dudley could hold onto Tschuna for longer, but I guess as soon as they find a partner for Daseep she will have to move again.

Since it has now been announced on the Facebook page I can say that Botzman and Ana have now been introduced together. They have been getting on quite well!

Had a quick visit this afternoon after going to Hamerton earlier and can confirm that the tigers definitely appear to be getting on well. They were rubbing noses through the fence, as they have been tempoarily seperated again following the female sustaining a foot injury, but this was not apparently a result of fighting.
Other than getting my first sighting of the indian rhino calf, latest gaur calf and the vicuna, i can't think of anything else new to report.

Went for the afternoon today. A few things worth noting:

1. Walking past the lake I noticed what looked like dirty swans. On further inspection realised they were pelicans! They must have arrived/been moved there within the last few days as they weren't there on Monday (as far as I remember!). Not sure of species (no signs anywhere and I'm not a pelican expert!) so here's a link to a photo I uploaded to the gallery - http://www.zoochat.com/216/pelican-id-310699/

2. The whole of the old play area with the slide etc. right round from Hullabazoo to the sealions is fenced off. Anyone have any ideas what's happening there?

3. Giraffe house closed.

4. Far half of the bongo house was shut. Was a shame because I was hoping to see the vicuna but only about three windows were accessible all with bongo in! Not too sure why it'd be closed...

5. Saw 3 red pandas all very active. Think it was 2 young and one adult :)

6. Group of ring-tailed lemurs in the house on the B&W ruffed lemur island. No sign of any B&W ruffed, though I don't recall ever seeing them on that island! Not sure what's going on there...

Think that's everything. If anyone has any questions go ahead and ask :)
