ZSL Whipsnade Zoo whipsnade 2013

I'm impressed, never thought that they would allow the Indians out, especially considering how much effort has gone into their paddock. I assume a staff vehicle watches the rhino's whenever they're out?

Yeah I was very suprised to see them out - maybe I got lucky? I dont go as much as I use to due to being at uni. There was someone in a jeep watching them but the Rhinos were hardly moving about - far more interested in the food!

Indian Rhino, Karamat has now left for Planckendael

I believe this is the female calf that experienced a difficult birth?

By my reckoning they have now bred five(?) from the current two females, 1.1 with 'Jaffna' as father, and 2.1 with 'Hugo' as father.

1.0 is at West Midlands.
0.1 is at Chester.
0.1 now gone to Plackendael
2.0 still at Whipsnade(?)

Ajang (older male calf) and Jamil (newest male calf) are both at Whipsnade. Asha (female) went to Chester, Karamat (female - name means 'Miracle' I think so she was a difficult birth) went to Belgium in November I think. I'm not sure of the calves before Asha...

That sounds right to me, as Pertinax said, there have been 5 calves born to the current 2 females. I think 3 births prior to them, the last being a male born mid 80s that went to Chester & i saw there in 1991.

Scrap that, Karamat hadn't left in November, though I was sure she left before the new calf was born which was 12th December. Can't seem to find anywhere about when she left, must have not posted about it when it happened...

Strange , i remember Belgium being mentioned, but can't find when! Karamat was still there when i went 3/12/12,
but think she left not long after that.

Very odd. Would've thought at least one person would've mentioned it! Maybe she left in that week between you going and Jamil being born...?

From the current females, just the male that went to West Midlands. Forget his name now. He is quite a lot younger than their female though- not the best pairing age-wise as she will mature first..:(

Previous Indian rhino births at Whipsnade;

1950-60's. parents; Mohan & Mohini. two calves born (male and female) both reared.

1970-80's. parents;Kumar & Roopa. a total of eight calves born(afaik) but only four, all male, were reared. 'Yodha' at Chester/Berlin was one(the last?) of them.

Thanks for correcting me, for some reason i thought Roopa had only had one calf that survived.
The male now at wmsp is Rap i think. I can't remember whether he was born before or after Asha though.

On checking the Zsl & Chester websites, Asha was born in 2006, so was the first for the current females.
Rap was born 2007

No, (afaik) she had four- all males. They all went to European Zoos I believe, but not sure how many are still alive now apart from 'Yodha'. Another was called 'Bardia.'

That's right- 'Rap'.:) As you've found out, he was the 2nd calf from the current breeding. So the order of their recent five births has been 'Asha(f) Rap(m) Ajang (m) Karamat(f) Jamal(m). They have done much better than previously, with all these calves surviving.

Complete list of Whipsnade births:

Mohini X Mohan
0.1 - born 29/10/1957 and given the name, Mohinija. She went from Whipsnade to Milwaukee in 1959 and died there in 1975

1.0 - born 18/8/1960 and named Manik, he remained at Whipsnade where he also died in 1975

Kumar X Roopa
1.0 - born 21/5/1981 DNS

1.0 - born 9/3/1983. Named Bheema he transferred to Planckendael in 1985 and was there until his death in 1999

1.0 - born 9/8/1986, the previously mentioned Yoda

1.0 - born 8/5/1988. He was given the name, Ropen. He left Whipsnade for Dvur Kralove in 1990 and as of 2008 was at Nurnberg

1.0 - born 2/10/1989. Named Bardia, he stayed at Whipsnade until his death in 1995

0.1 - born 19/10/1993. Unfortunately she died the day after birth

...and that was the final birth until "Asha" in 2006

So Roopa had 6 calves, not 8 as I said. The first is listed as a female though.

It seems only two(?) of them are still alive, at Nurnberg(?) and Berlin.

With Mohan and Mohini, sometime after the birth of the 2nd calf 'Manik', the father Mohan died so breeding ceased. They were unable to get another bull but just kept Manik together with his mother as a pair. The first, female calf, Mohinija, was paired with the first(male) calf 'Rudra' born at Basel to make up a pair for Milwaukee, but they never bred there. These two were the first(Basel) and second(Whipsnade) Indian Rhinos ever born in Zoos.

I spent some time at Whipsnade a couple of weeks ago and ended up spending quite some time in the area by the red pandas, otters and ring tailed lemurs. There is an enclosure nearby with grey box section steel railings which I think used to house black rhino. I think Whipsnade went out of black rhino a few years ago, but are there any plans to go back into that species there in the future?

Karamat arrived just in recently to Planckendael. At 2 she will become the future breeding cow. Residing female Johanna is then retired from breeding.

ah well that would explain why hoover and lola are back together in the indoor pool!
i was just going to ask what was going on but i dont need to now lol.

Their last years with Black rhino were not successful breeding-wise and two different females died, leaving just the bull 'Quinto' who was then returned to Chester where he originally came from.

That's not to say they might not have them again in the future if new animals were available, but the fact they didn't replace the last ones makes me think maybe they don't intend to.
