ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade Zoo 2014 #1

Spent a great afternoon up at the Zoo and took some cool photo's (May upload them, but I'm not sure how you do that!). Saw the Blesbok for the first time, through a couple of fences and was awesome to see the Impala and Kudu out in the main paddock.

Also saw the Waterbuck in with the Zebra's for the first time, plus was surprised to see no Wolves...unless I missed some info on that!

Have the signs been removed from the wolf enclosure?

Id be interested to know the long term plans for the Asian elephants. When would ZSL think of bringing new blood in? Current breeding cows are Kaylee, Azizah (who are now in their 30's I believe) and Karishma. In terms of long term breeding, you've only got Karishma and (eventually) Donna!

Whipsnade will be receiving London's Asian lions in the autumn, in preparation for the construction of the latter's new lion exhibit.

They will indeed, but they won't be on show.

It'll be interesting to see how this works. Does Lions of the Serengeti have substantial off-show facilities? I'd imagine they'll need some form of outdoor enrichment but, if nothing else, it'll be interesting to see how the pride react to their temporary housemates!;)

I sort of presume they would be held elsewhere in the Park, though I don't know where they have any suitable housing.

I can't think of anywhere either. Given that the lions are likely to be at Whipsnade for about a year, it may have been an idea to build a cheap open topped enclosure (Linton's new lion enclosure cost about £100 k) , hold the London lions in it temporarily, then use it afterwards for Leopards, snow leopard or jaguar. But i guess all ZSL's building fund is going towards the wonderful new exhibit at London!

Anyone else think that a bigger Asian Lion group would be better done at Whipsnade anyway? There's much more space, it would be more cheaply built, and Whipsnade actually has the Indian ungulates (Axis Deer, Nilgai and Blackbuck) that a proper "Lions of the Gir" exhibit needs to be credible.

ZSL Whipsnade..

Doesn't EAZA frown on African & Asian Lions being held on the same site?

Wouldn't it be lovely Ian! However, I believe the big "want" amongst many is snow leopard and a certain orange Ape!

Easier still just move the existing non-breeding african lions to the existing London enclosure with a bit of improvement & give the breeding asian group the facility at Whipsnade. Then have the money to bring in a few new species at both collections!

Interesting, never knew that! Why would it be an issue?

Incidentally, I believe the new exhibit at London has the tentative title of "Land of the Lions."
