ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade zoo 2016

Three months ahead and under budget should be in ready for the winter.

3 months?!?!? Interesting. Is the plan to join together the old stable with the new? Otherwise it doesn't seem to be a huge space for a large group of ele's. And what of the Bull stable?

A previous post mentioned new exhibits. No plans as yet, but here's something to consider: the dinosaurs cost the zoo £180,000. Now I've no doubt the zoo will recoup that, but they're only around for just over a month, so that's a significant outlay to exceed. Imagine what that sum could build you or exhibit!

But of course, Whipsnade will know the effect on visitor numbers the dinos had at Chester, Edinburgh, Bristol (etc, etc) so will be confident they'll recoup the costs.

I was there Friday and the dinos were in the process of being installed on the lawn between the bird show and the squirrel monkeys/pandas/otters.

For the record, I also saw two brown bears. :D

I visited again today. ‘Holly’ has, indeed, recently been sent to another collection and all the signs for her have been taken down.

I was told she had been sent to "a zoo in the Czech Republic” .

Holly is right now in backroom of Hippo pavilion at Ostrava zoo. She is in adaptation phase, gets used to new rooms and keepers. When she does good, she will be able to visit outside pen and at last, be mixed with the herd here.

Visited whipsnade today; saw only two baby crocs, elephants house looks amazing . Dinosaur exhibit slowly coming together.
Was more annoyed sealion show wasn't even a show just a new trainer playing with Dominic for less than 5 minutes and the two girls who they said weren't performing as its breeding season so they can do as they wish, but why advertise it as a show then?
Also the bird show didn't happen as the first bird American eagal flew off and couldn't be retrieved! Any questions feel free to ask, will try answer

Both girls are pregnant, so that may explain the indifferent explanation you got!;) Best not to build people's hopes up in case something unfortunate happens I imagine.

I did think that is why but with 7 large school groups watching what was suppose to be a sealion demonstration it was pretty dissapppointing , they should have ran the show with just Dominic and Oscar pre training as he looked like he needed stimulation after being seperatef from mum!

I understand your frustration, the same happened on Sunday, but there was a full explanation that the females were pregnant, the leaflets with talk/show times are probably printed well in advance for each week/ month.
Where show animals are concerned, nothing is guaranteed!

Note: I rarely defend ZSL!

Substantial works now happening on the Discovery Centre, which is now "closed for the forseeable future." Saki monkey interior stripped and gutted, though still occupied.

So What is Happening with the Discovery Centre Then?

Is it Getting Revamped or Changed Into Something Else (A New Reptile House or an Aquarium), Or Are Whipsnade Just Cleaning it?

Work has now begun on renovating the wolf enclosure. However, for the short term, it will be used as a 'holding' area for excess stock.

When did they stop offering free car entry in winter?

I hadn't noticed that they were charging, but then I probably didn't notice for a long time that car parking was free now.

I have always taken car in since I became a Fellow 4 years ago.

Free car entry wasn't exactly 'offered', you HAD to take your car in from November to February as the car park was closed!

Looks like the Dinos have worked their magic!

Visitor figures for the year-to-date show Whipsnade roughly 13,000 above its budget, exceeding London. Surprisingly (IMO anyway, if you consider the lion investment) London is approx 47,000 below budget.
