ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade zoo 2017

Last I saw they were still the same as they were when the latest calf was born; mum, dad, two teenage sons and a daughter, the latest calf.

On the subject of the Gaur, does anyone know when they plan to move them into the Onager paddock?

On top: Can they bring in 1-2 more cows for breeding from the Continent?

Would it be at all possible for LSZ to import some new bloodlines from an Indian zoo or another Asian zoo for the EEP the inbreeding would be high within European the group!

I guess if they were determined enough. Not sure though where our founders came from. If it is the Indian Subcontinent population all along it should be relatively straight forward. But given the bureaucracy in India it might still take a dogged team willing to enter into negotiating a deal and a workable relationship with Mysore Zoo c.s.

Your quite right Kifaru the bureaucracy would be a major problem there. Maybe another outlet via Singapore could be an option?. This may of been the same type of problem London zoo had with the two pairs of Asian lions they were hoping to obtain which appears not to have happened!

ZSL imported a pair (1.1) some weeks ago!!!

Thats really good news at least they got hold of one pair, new bloodlines are needed in the EEP. Are they now in the new "Land of the Lions exhibit" at London!
Not yet, as in quarantine at Whipsnade. Just read up the Whipsnade 2017 page 1 and the latter bits of the 2016 thread for further details.

Wonder whether they count only the deer - muntjac and Chinese water deer - as in per collection or those wild on the grounds? Anyone more info?
Both populations of deer were introduced to the zoo grounds by Whipsnade themselves, so they are counted as part of the zoo's collection. There were no wild individuals within their perimeter before introduction by Whipsnade took place.

I was interested to note the following details in the Ungulate collection;

Only one Onager(0.1) is listed. Does this mean they are going out of them and what happened to the others?

Only 0.5 Blackbuck listed. This means the last male of the original ZSL stock in Asian Plains must have finally died, before being mixed with the imported females.:(

The single male American Bison is still clinging on.

Some groups have no male, from memory these are Axis Deer, Kudu, Waterbuck and Nile Lechwe. I wonder if they will add fresh males or phase these out as they die off. In the case of the Axis Deer at least, a total of 0.21 indicates possibly some selection at work.

but they only list 0.0.2 Reeves' Muntjac and 0.0.30 Chinese Water Deer, which suggests they are not counting the wild animals in their inventory.

(Although looking again, the 0.1.317 Red-necked Wallabies and 0.0.69 Mara obviously says that they are including them).

I would suggest they are and that populations of both have just decreased.

while you were posting I was editing my post to add in that the figures for some other species would suggest they are indeed including the wild exotics. But I wonder if the 0.0.2 for the muntjac is missing a number? It seems wrong.

I remember seeing a really low reported number for muntjac before and then seeing more (adult) individuals than that the next time I visited; I think there is definitely something different about how they report the muntjac compared to the others.

I notice the prairie dogs are listed again - I seem to recall they were missing from the stocklists for a time.

These could be estimates for the Chinese Water and muntjac deer, neither of which have confined populations at Whipsnade. Its a big park and I don't know how they could count them accurately given they come and go into the larger animal paddocks and in the open areas. Might explain why the Muntjac record is so low if they missed some, as they are quite furtive whereas the Chinese water Deer are often more visible.
