ZSL Whipsnade Zoo Whipsnade zoo 2017

A pity, yes. The moose have proved to be victims of poor enclosure design and location - ultimately the enclosure was far too open, leading to high levels of stress and anxiety.

When I saw it I thought it wasn't very good, being so open- it seems they had just put them where it was convenient without taking into account their habits at all. Anyway too late to suggest that instead of getting rid, a new enclosure in a wooded area would be the answer, I suppose what's left of the Bluebell woodland area is sacrosanct anyway. Perhaps their new homes can cater for their needs better.

Visited the Zoo this afternoon, love Whipsnade at this time of year!

Things of interest were the Gaur who have now been moved into the old Black Rhino paddock (although they only had access to the yard at the moment), and the Sea Lions now have a bigger indoor area as the old seating area has been turned into a rocky area for them.

It also looked like most of the work on the bears is happening behind the enclosure.

I keep meaning to say that on our last visit we noticed that they are installing a zipwire run thing for the wild dogs to chase meat on.

Do these things ever work? The ones I've seen installed seem to fall out of use fairly quickly.

Tbh I have never seen one used with hunting dogs - but I have seen them used to good effect with cheetah in the US.

Saw the one at London used once and the dogs really seemed to enjoy it! The larger space at Whipsnade might suit this mode of enrichment very well

Amur tigress Anastasia has been euthanised due to age-related health issues. She was the last surviving member of the litter born in 2001 to Boris and Vanda.

Very sad news, I remember seeing Boris and Vanda's cubs when I was younger

I'll be at Whipsnade again this Christmas as 2 years ago I've never been at Whipsnade for Christmas before.

Two 18 month old brown bears seen playing in the pool this morning, first day on show I think! Hopefully the future for brown bear is better than predicted earlier!

Excellent news!
Do you know where the new brown bears came from?
The twenty-four year old brown bear "Winslow" had to be put down in the summer; any news on the other elderly bear "Wellington"?
