Some good news from Werribee, they are expecting some time soon the birth of another white rhino. As Letaba gave birth in November 2005 it is highly likely that it is another female that is pregnant. Letaba has given birth to the two calves that have been born at Werribee ( two males) so it would be good that one of the other females adds her bloodlines to the region, lets hope that it is a girl.

Thats really good news Jay, yes lets hope its a girl, sounds like we might have a rhino boom on our hands soon, I hope.
 
I wonder where the two White rhino at Mareeba will end up going if the animals there are sold off, I seem to remember that both are males which came from the San Deigo wild animal park. Maybe these two are of a different bloodline from most other white rhino already here?.
 
I hope that they can join a breeding program here soon before they get too old.
 
lets hope some common sence will come out of the mess and miles of red tape, its what is best for the animals which should be important.
 
speaking of Oragers, are Dubbos still breeding?, why are the other open range zoos not keeping them as well.
 
Just to get back to the Onagers, I had a look at ISIS and there are 3 male & 6 females at the Western plains zoo they are the only ones in Australia, maybe Monarto zoo could hold a few as well.
 
I think the first Onagers (2. 2.) came out from Rotterdam zoo in Holland so you would think moving some from Dubbo to Monarto would be much easier moving them within the same country.
 
onagers are actually really wild horses like crazy , u have to be carful with them very strong
and i dnt think they would tolerate mnay other species unless alot of room
 
Onagers are middle-eastern in origin. for a really authentic exhibit they would look great with fallow deer and red deer. Mongolian wild horses are of course, from mongol-northwestern china region and unfortunately we don't really have any other ungulate species from the gobi desert. however for a long while i have thought it would be great if the zoos imported some bactrian (two-humped) camels to go with them. the wild bactrian is critically endangered and if they imported pure-bred wild bactrians it would be of great conservation value. they have recently established that the wild bactrian is very genetically distinct from the bulky domestic form.
 
Thats a good point Pat, wild bactrians here would be a good thing for breeding at a place like Monarto zoo. but are they very hard to get????.
 
yea tht would be great , maybe we dnt have them due to the gov thinkin they could get loose and the potntial for pest pecies , thts y wildbeast carnt enter
 
Maybe the red tape we have here might bar us having any animals in zoos one day, regardless how rare or endangered they may be. as we know there are many species today that are with us today only because they have been saved in zoos.

not really the amount of renovbations currently planned are phenomonal, but there is still lotsa room, and for putting them with deer, Monatro has that Rare Subspecies of Fallow
