White Tigers and Lions Currently in Captivity

Loro Parque in Tenerife has 2 White Tigers. Jungle Park in Tenerife used to house 2 White Tigers & 2 White Lions but don't know what happened to them. Does anyone know?

Since I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread yet, the Greater Vancouver Zoo in British Columbia, Canada, has a trio of white lion siblings, one male and two females. They acquired them from African Lion Safari back in November of 2021.

Not sure if you've gotten the answer to your question from 2+ years ago, but Toronto has one male and two female white lions (not breeding atm). Parc Safari only has three of the four Toronto brothers; not sure where exactly number four went.
Soon after they moved to Parc Safari, the fourth was getting bullied and his brothers rejected him out of the coalition. His name is Gus and he was transferred to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. Here’s a very recent post… The Wild Animal Sanctuary

Seriously, that an accredited facility like Metro Toronto Zoo displays white tiger and has produced cubs in the past ..., say not more. I suspect or hope they are on phase out

Just, I also hope more generally that white tiger do no longer get spread around so much and get contracepted or neutered to prevent any undesirable breeding and fixing spaces desparately needed for endangered Sumatran or Amur tiger!

Toronto has/had white lions, not white tigers.

My bad, I realise I fumbled up .... and thanks for correcting me here. I failed to check beforehand the complete MZ lion and tiger history. Even so, I would appreciate if accredited zoos would more sparingly manage to present either white lions or tigers.

What continues to surprise me is that it is almost a sport in the private sector to exhibit white lions and tigers and on social media and PR/communcation are talkes about as somehow rare or threatened and therefore justify their presentation at their facilities.

BTW, I would appreciate if someone can update the list of white tigers and lions and hopefully manage how many of each are as yet represented in zoos and private facilities (M/F/U). I know this has been done in the past, but I wonder if some more in-depth down to sex / age ratio and individuals' level may be presented.

I'm not sure I see the point in separating out an arbitrary list of "roadside zoos" here. Especially since it's hard to use that moniker for all of those places.

That’s true. I agree that not all are considered “roadside zoos” but a portion of these places are just privately owned collections rather than zoos. I referred to them as “roadside zoos” due to the fact that they are privately owned facilities with no accreditation (AZA, EAZA, Humane Society). I would change it but I can no longer edit it.

Write about three private indoor zoos that brought in white tigers and white lions in 2018. First of all, two of these are owned by the same owner.

That two are Bukyeong Zoo(부경동물원) in Gimhae and Daegu Ini Theme Park(대구 아이니 테마파크) in Daegu, both owned by an animal trading company called Ini Group.

There is a pair of white tigers in Bukyeong Zoo and a pair of white lions in Daegu Ini Theme Park. I don't hear the news of the place in detail, but I think there will be no breeding because their all indoor zoo's environment is hellish, very hellish.

201809271248086830_5.jpg

This photo is Bukyeong Zoo's white tiger enclosure.
There are no outdoor facilities, and all you see in the picture is all of this enclosure.
source is Korean internet news.

The last remaining place is the Play Aquarium Bucheon(플레이아쿠아리움 부천) in Bucheon City. There are a pair of white tigers and a pair of white lions, and the environment is terrible to the same extent as the two above mentioned.

So in conclusion, to summarize the number of white tigers and white lions in South Korea, like this.

Eveland - White tiger: more 10, White lion: maybe 6.
Bukyeong Zoo - White tiger: pair.
Daegu Ini Theme Park - White lion: pair.
Play Aquarium Bucheon - White tiger: pair, White lion: pair.

I hope these places will stop raising white tigers and white lions as soon... Especially, the last three places are not even qualified to display animals, so I hope they stop being a zoo.

I'll update on the situation in South Korea. Currently, Everland has suspended the permanent display of all white tigers and white lions, and According to visitor's personal blog posting, white tigers will be released on safaris only on Fridays and Saturdays.

I heard that the Everland tried to 3 white lions display on safari with the common lions, but they were not released because they were too old to compete. In my opinion, I think Everland is taking white tigers and white lions closed and limited displaying to follow AZA's instructions to its members not to do intentional breeding to create anomalous phenotype.

On April 21, 2022, not long after Everland changed the vehicle used for safari attractions from bus to tram, lions were fighting in safari, and a white lion hit the door of the tram, so the door was damaged and the lion's head coming into the tram. I think this accident also may be related to closed-display of white lions.

Both Bukyong Zoo and Deagu INI Theme Park, which were run by the same owner, the animal trader Kim Jun, were shut down due to financial difficulties caused by COVID-19, but the animals still remain inside the facility.

However, the animals were left unattended without proper care due to financial difficulties overlapping with the previous hellish breeding conditions, In this situation, Bukyong's male white tiger was dead and the female was confirmed to have heart disease.

A pair of white lions at Deagu INI are seems to be no health problems, but trapped in a terrible underground facility where there were no proper electricity.

Several animal rights groups and Cheongju Zoo were tried to rescue the animals, but Korean law treats all captive animals there as Kim Jun's private property and there is no way to forcibly seize the animals. Kim Jun claims to donate his animals to a new zoo to be built in Goryeong county next year, but according to Goryeong county, the official application to build a zoo in Goryeong County has never been received. In other words, he appears to be lying.

Play Aquarium Bucheon, where a pair of white tigers and white lions are trapped, does not seem to have any special financial difficulties, but its poor environment, along with Kim Jun's two facilities, has been under constant media attack, and allegations have recently been raised that it is operating illegally by changing its use in locations where the establishment of zoos and aquariums is not originally permitted.

The enforcement of the revised zoo law in December last year added a condition that all facilities that raise large carnivores must have outdoor exhibits, and the grace period for this law is until Dec. 13, 2028. The Bucheon Aquarium said it would send white tigers, white lions, and Asiatic black bears raised indoors to other zoos and their enclosure space make to a Kid's Cafe, but it is not known when that will happen.

Finally, to update the total number according to the situation so far, it is as follows.

Everland - White tiger: unknown (limited displaying)/ White lion: unknown, maybe more than 3? (display closed)
Bukyong Zoo (closed down) - White tiger: 1 female
Daegu INI Theme Park (closed) - White lion: a pair
Play Aquarium Bucheon - White tiger: a pair / White lion: a pair

The law and citizenship have improved to some extent, but it is not possible to save white tigers, white lions, and other captive animals trapped in poor places right now. As AZA's statement said, "Caring for rescued anomalous phenotype animal (under the some display preconditions) is an appropriate action for AZA member organizations," it is hoped that Everland, the richest zoo in Korea and AZA certification body, will come forward, but unfortunately, they are not likely to come forward because they are companies that are thoroughly profit-seeking.

Chapultepec zoo and Leon zoo both have a white tiger each that were confiscated by mexican enviromental authorities. I think they both are females.

I'm new to this forum, and don't know if its been mentioned yet, but many zoos in Asia, particularly India seem to have white tigers.
Idk about the genetics of the other ones in Asia, but all whites in India are pure Bengal tigers. they have, to my knowledge, never been hybridized with other subspecies.

That isn't surprising. At least eight different white tigers were recorded in the princely state of Rewa over a period of time spanning from 1909 to 1959.

That doesn't include Mohan, the original captive white tiger, by the way. He was captured at the approximate age of nine months in what is now Bandhavgarh National Park. (His mother and three siblings were not so "lucky", as they shot and killed by hunters.)

In zome zoos which have only one white tiger, they are Bred with normal orange Bengals, resulting in normal colored cubs being bred. Occasionally however a white cub is born.

Usually zoos that have tigers (in talking about India) they usually have more than 5 of them, including a few whites

Due to concerns over inbreeding, most zoos have stopped breeding these feline color variants. The purpose of this thread is not to discuss the ethics of the movement because that has already been discussed on many different threads on this site, and a general consensus seems to already have been reached.

Instead, the purpose of this thread is to attempt to create a database listing the current populations of all white tigers and white lions in captivity worldwide, and then to maintain this list as they get phased out over time. As far as I can tell, no such database currently exists.

Attempting to find information thus far has proved to be difficult, with most sources being either too vague or too outdated to be taken seriously. Lucky for me though, I have this site full of people worldwide who I hope could help me out. :)

With all that said, can you all please list the zoos, aquariums, wildlife parks, casinos, etc. that you know for sure currently exhibit either white tigers or white lions, as well as how many of each they hold (including those that aren't on display)? Those two bits of information are the most important of what I’m looking for, but any additional information such as age or sex would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone!

I remember some white tigers in Singapore zoos and White lions in Night Safari Singapore

Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (United Kingdom) - 1.1 Casper, Frosty
These two, both from the WMSP, are leucistic individuals. The Sanctuary, when under the name of the Isle of Wight Zoo, had a leucistic Tiger named Zena. She arrived at zoo in the summer of ‘96, at just 3-weeks-old after she was rejected by her mother at Longleat Safari Park. She lived for 21 years until her death in 2017.
