Wild futures/monkey sanctuary

I'm going down to volunteer at Wild Futures and was wondering if anyone else had volunteered and had any tips?
 
The one thing I have taken from their publicity is that they are very anti-primates in captivity but i'm sure it will be wonderful working with the woolly monkeys :) working with any primate can be very rewarding:D
 
It's hypocritical. If they believe all primates in captivity are suffering then their primates are suffering and they should have them destroyed. At least zoos believe that their animals are having a good life.
 
Perhaps they believe that the primates have been screwed 0over by humans enough and have decided to let them live their lives out as naturally as possible. They don't breed, only one woolly monkey has been born and that was due to contraception failure, so they aren't increasing the numbers in captivity. They speak out against the pet trade and lab monkeys I'm unaware of any published stuff of theirs on zoos in general.

All the pprimates have been rescued from the pet trade other than the barrbries who were abandoned by a French circus. If you read the stories of the individual monkeys it gives an overview of where they have come from.
 
Either way they must believe it's possible for primates to have some quality of life in captivity or it doesn't make sense to keep them alive.
 
As I said they rescue primates from situations that are far less than ideal and give them homes for life. They have never said that there is no way primates can be kept well in captivity.
 
Such a shame that this place has now been hijacked my people anti-private keepers,given that the place was set up and founded by just such a person!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some people have the mentality that it's OK for them to keep wild animals but no one else, I guess the founder was one of those types.

Are people on here deliberately dense? These primates were rescued from awful situations, should they have just been left in those situations to protect people's hobbies? Any private keeper worth their salt would agree it's not ok to have capuchins living in bird cages. Should they have left the barberies tied to the lamppost the circus abandoned them? If you think there is nothing wrong g with those situations then you aren't animal lovers.
 
There is a difference between keeping primates or any other animals in purpose built enclosures with keepers knowledge to keep them healthy and we'll balanced and keeping primates on their own in your lounge because you fancied a cool pet. The latter situation is what wild futures and similar organizations are against and it truly baffles me that you people can't understand that.

have a read of their website, it explains the history of the place. They originally kept and bred only woolly monkeys. Later they changed to a pure sanctuary, so no breeding.

I have no issue with a sanctuary providing homes to rescued primates, and have no issue with campaigning against animal abuse or against inexperienced people keeping exotics. Rallying against all private keepers just seems perverse though, especially if it is then extended to zoos (although from their website Wild Futures doesn't appear to do the latter).

why are you so angry all the time? Almost all your posts are belligerent rantings. Calm down.

The only person on this thread being dense is yourself. This has been quite amusing to watch from across the pond. You join a zoo aficionado forum, yet yourself are anti-zoo and think that with a few rants filled with no evidence and multiple misspellings that we will all magically join your side. No one on this site will disagree with you that getting primates out of poor housing situations is a bad thing. Almost no one on here will disagree with you that keeping primates as pets is a bad thing. Nearly everyone will disagree with you however, that housing primates in an adequate zoo setting is a bad thing.

Expect to be ridiculed if you come on here and espouse ideas that are contrary to the ethos of this forum.
 
It's really hard not to be angry on here when you get people that are so obtuse. And have their own agendas and can't be shifted from them. It seems this is a place where zoos are considered God like and can do no wrong.

My issue isn't really with the sanctuary it's with monkeyarm's lack of logic. S/he seems to have an issue with animals in captivity but then wants to volunteer at a place that keeps animals in captivity. I assume that a person who thought animals suffered in captivity wouldn't want to prolong that suffering and would prefer euthanasia.
 
No one thinks zoos are God like I just don't buy the anti propaganda

Where have I said housing primates in adequate zoos is wrong?

I'm not sure aficionado is the right word rather think blind followers is the better description, it's like dealing with cult members. Don't drink the cool aid anyone

Pot....meet kettle. I find it faintly amusing that you have joined this site to troll us, yet think we are the obtuse ones who are posting with an agenda.

As for your claim that we believe zoos are considered Godlike..... try reading the many, many threads posted by members of this site criticising collections such as South Lakes, Twycross...... even ZSL London Zoo!
