Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2013

Paid my first visit to the zoo last Monday (Bank holiday), never have I been to a busier zoo! It was packed, cars queuing back to Doncaster. Despite the crowds I thoroughly enjoyed the zoo, the quality of the building and landscaping is excellent. They are currently building an enclosure for giant anteaters.

They were building the Giant Anteater enclosure way back in september last year, believe it got put on hold due to no Giant Anteaters being available for them.

That said have to agree about the quality of the building of the collection,to the point that I will be very surprised if it isn't one of the top 5 collections,in the United Kingdom within the next 5 years!

Interesting, I wonder why there’s been such a lack of progress with the giant anteater enclosure considering how quickly the zoo has progressed in other areas?
I too can see this zoo being one of the UK’s top zoos. How much potential is there for expansion? There seems to be a lot of land around the zoo, I presume at least some of this is owned by the zoo.

Zoogiraffe more or less answered this in the previous post

I really should pay more attention. My school reports were right.

Visited the zoo yesterday, have now been twice as we enjoyed it some much last summer.

Saw the new giraffe & Guinea Baboon exhibits.

Wondered if anyone can clear up a few things please?:-

- There was only one Capybara, does anyone know what happened to the other one?
- There lemur numbers seemed to be decreasing, there wasn't many of the Black & White Ruffed Lemurs, nor the Brown Lemurs. We spoke to a keeper to enquire about, the whereabouts of the Ring-Tailed Lemurs who said they have just had babies & were being alternated around with the other 2 species. Husband to be, was quite disappointed as he loves the lemurs & missed out on seeing his favourite species.

Got my fix of seeing the beautiful zebras at YWP.

Have not been for a few weeks so the loss of a capybara must be quite recent (do you know there was only 1 or you only saw 1?)

As of about a month ago -
B&W ruffed lemurs - there are 2, there have only been 2 (father & son) since Lucy the female died giving birth about 2 years ago.

Ring-tails - there are now mother, father, and 1 offspring from the first breeding, 2 from the second, last years baby died and then whatever they've had this year. Sadly Silver the other lemur died last year or earlier this year (the other 4 originals left a couple of years ago after they all fell out.)

Browns - One of the original 3 died within the last year and they got a male so there should now be 3.

Thank you for replying Orange Person.

I walked around the enclosure on two different occasions yesterday. There was only one, the second time I walked around it was in almost the exact same spot as before. With its fur looking a bit patchy.

That's interesting to know about the lemurs, thank you will show it to h2b.

Also what has happened to the elderly Racoon Dogs? We may have bypassed that bit.

They were euthanased earlier in the year. I was quite pleased I got to see them the week before and they both came out of the house & hobbled over which made me feel a bit guilty as I had nowt to give them!

That's sad to hear, they were my favourites at the zoo. :( Do you know if the younger Racoon Dogs obtained last year have gone in their enclosure? When I last saw them they were in a fairly small pen in the wooded area close to the Red River Hogs.

Aww bless. When I last saw them in August I did think there time was up soon.

Sand Cat - The young Racoon Dog pups were initially housed in a pen at the end of the Macaws last summer but not sure if they are around. Admittedly we forgot about them.

They were still by the hogs at Easter.

Called into the park today and work has started on the anteater enclosure.

Been back again today. Asked about the single capybara and was told that unfortunately the male had passed away after a sudden and short illness.

Does the park still have plenty of room to expand? I thought they where goign to expand at the back of the tiger enclosure but thats now wetlands. Do they own the land behind the birds of prey display area?

Been for a wander around this morning and I'm pleased to say that there are now 3 capybara in the South America enclosure. Not sure of age/sex of the 2 newcomers - though they appear much younger than the existing one -nor where they've come from. But it is good news and by the way they were swimming around together, they appear to be settling in.

Pure speculation (tut tut I know its frowned on) but the twycross babies have moved on, though I've no idea where to.

Well I've no idea what's going on with the capybara. Was at the park last weekend and only one on show. My son asked the ranger on duty in the South American walk through what had happened to the others (2 new ones we'd seen previously) and was told that they had only ever had 2 and the male had died.
Im sure I didn't imagine the 2youngsters, or mistake mara for capybara. Could it be the new comers didn't settle with the established female so had to move them out?
On the plus side, the anteater enclosures are coming along at a pace.
