Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2014

went last week talking to keepers was just amazed at their future plans. Such a massive list on what there trying to get. They have land to make the place 3 times as big plus there's loads of gaps they can fill in. Sounds like it'll be as big as chester one day. I know two of the leopard brothers have moved on but it always annoyed 2 where always of show at a time
If Chester built on all the land that the zoo owned it would be larger than Whipsnade,I also know that although YWP own alot more land and it is not more than amount of land that Chester haven't built on yet!!!

Our zoo's bigger than your zoo ;). The good thing about YWP is that it's only 25 mins away and is therefore much more appealing than Chester Zoo, as indeed Chester is close by for your goodself. If YWP is going to get 3x the size, God help the poor punters who already moan about the amount of walking required on Trip Advisor. Let's hope the planned miniature railway is still on the cards

Sorry not looking for an arguement, but my post was mean't to point out that no matter how much YWP expanded it has not got the land for it ever to be bigger than Chester, and not a my zoo is bigger than yours it was just mean't to point out the vast amount of land Chester has still to expand on to if they want to!

Your post also shows that you know bugger all about me,because if you did you would know that I am a big fan of YWP and try to get over atleast once a year to visit! Also Chester is not and never will be the perfect zoo even for somebody that lives as close as me,hence why I visit so many other collections during the year!

Now now ladies, dont lets be fighting.;)

I too only live 25 minutes from Y.W.P but am going over to Chester zoo on Thursday of next week so will be able to make a direct comparison. I am also going to South Lakes Wild animal park the week after, but am going with mixed emotions. I really want to see a Jaguar and snow leapord, never seen either before, but have heard really bad reports about some of the cramped enclosures/mixed exhibits and generally not a brilliant zoo all round. I bet its poles apart from the lovely spacious and mostly luxurious enclosures found at Y.W.P.
And I cant believe that anyone can complain about the walking at Y.W.P. That's part of the joy of the place in having large enclosures and room to not get barged and trodden on and run over by push-chairs. No pleasing some folk as they say.

Sigh! I wasn't getting at you, hence the use of the smiley. However, it did seem you were indulging in a bit of oneupmanship.

I apologise if offence was taken ; none was meant.

The comment regarding excessive walking was merely aimed at regular contributors to Trip Advisor, who complain about having to walk, animals being in large open spaces as in the wild, therefore not always being in open view, amongst others . The most baffling however are those which mark the place down for its perceived shortage of decent, cheap catering.

oneupmanship... on zoochat.... never!!! Some members on here take comments on here far too personally and seem to think they are a know all because they have more posts than others.

I appreciated your comment and thought it was pretty funny so good on you for adding a light hearted element to the forum.

Does anyone know when the Polar Bear enclosure is due to be finished?
Have they already got a bear, or bears, sourced?

Male Amur Leopard, Dimitri has left for Sables d’olonne in France. His brother Denzil will also go to Nordens Ark later in 2014

Quote: Whilst the Meerkats were moving house just across the Park, another park resident made a move much further afield.
Dimitri, one of the three Amur leopard brothers who has been living in Leopard Heights left to fulfil his role as part of the European breeding programme.

With only approximately 45 wild Amur leopards left in their native Russian Far East, the breeding programme is critical to breed these magnificent big cats for a planned reintroduction project in their homeland.
All three of YWP’s young male leopards will have their part to play in the programme. The leopard moves are decided by the Amur Leopard Studbook Coordinator to ensure the best genetic matches for these critically endangered animals.

"At 4 years old our leopard brothers are in their prime and ready to be paired up with a suitable females. Dimitri is the first to go and has left us to set up home in France at Zoo des Sables d’olonne," added Ms Williams.
“ Denzil is also due to leave this summer for Norden’s Ark Zoo in Sweden. We are now finalising the details to bring in our first female Amur Leopard, Freya, from Tallin Zoo in Estonia who will pair up with the remaining brother, Drake and we hope that they will breed in the future. It is very exciting to be part of such a ground breaking project.

Went today, the revamped cafe and shops were open (first day yesterday). The cafe is very non-zoo themed and I miss the 'converted rustic Doncaster barn' feel but the bacon sarnie was very good. As predicted the cafe opens at 9.30 and I'm assuming the park still opens at 10.

The new entrance kiosks were also open. The meerkats are all back together again in the new enclosure along with the mongoose.

Was surprised to hear Vlad and Tschuna (Amur tigers) have only met this week because I got photos of them all in the same enclosure last times I was there but did wonder if there had been a swap during the day. Tschuna wants to play but Vlad is not bothered, however she will be coming into season soon so I guess that will concentrate his mind.

They have started some landscaping on the outside of the bear-works but you can't see how far they've got inside. They don't know what bears they will get but no progress with the Mexican one.

Still have two male Amur leopards and the female hasn't arrived yet due to a leopard chain!

"due to a leopard chain"? What does this mean?

I would assume that this means several leopards are to be moved around from various zoos , thus due to space, the moving of the female cannot happen until other moves have taken place.

Yup! Maybe if you're not familiar with the UK housing market it's not obvious!

Now down to one leopard (Drake) and still waiting for the female.

Tschuna and Vlad (Amur tigers) have been mating so now fingers to be crossed that it did some good! Vlad is alternating between the two females.

I was surprised to hear that the bearworks currently in progress are only Phase 1 - enough space for 3-4 animals currently. Close to finishing now.

Disapointingly Colin the iconic goat ;) has gone to Whipsnade!

About time for some apes next please YWP!

Well today was my first visit to the park and i have to say that i was very impressed on the large and interesting enclosures that they have. my highlight was the lions:D and it got me thinking i wonder what they will do when the rescued lions have passed away? and does anyone know what new projects they have got planned, apart from the polar bears?

Well Banham tiger,Y.W.P. is very much my local zoo and the original Lions are dwindling in numbers from when the initial rescue from Romania took place. 1 family group recently went down to a female only pride so I don't know if they are possible to intergrate into one of the other prides or not. I think they will always keep 2 prides of lions in the 2 enclosures separated by the strip of water. If you were lucky enough to hear them have a roar at each other its fantastic. Makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
Personally I would love them to have one pride of African lions in one enclosure, and a pride of Asiatic lions in the neighboring enclosure.
In the enclosure furthest from the entrance with the waterfall in it I think Cheetahs would be a great addition.

As far as new projects -I have spoken to one of the rangers and enquired when the Giraffes are going to be allowed into the African plains with the Zebra etc. He told me that as soon as the Polar bear project is finished the construction team will move onto putting up the stronger version of fencing around the African plains and then the Giraffes will be allowed to mingle with the animals in there, weather permitting of course.
After that improvement scheme I have no idea what is next on the agenda. Personally I hope they tie in with the polar bears and build a stunning Penguin enclosure.Or if there is enough room near the South American area then a family of Giant Otters would be another great addition. Very vocal when they have young too.I hope they read Zoo Chat and take customers comments on board. Fingers crossed.:D

Zoos are not currently allowed to keep both African and Asian lions, so this idea is a non-starter..

This would only really tie-in with the polar bears if they went for a "ship carrying penguins for some reason happened to crash in Alaska" schtick that Hannover have gone for! (or an 'animals from cold areas' thing, I suppose).

Whoops, thats a bit of a major c#ck up on my part. Never realised that all penguins were south of the Equator only. That's my grammar school education for you.:o

And I didn't know that, must be the possibility of cross breeding and messing up the gene pool I assume.:(

Thanks for putting me straight sooty,i feel like a right berk now.
