Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2014

The raccoon dogs and the skunks are next to the red river hogs unless the 'new' enclosure is completed and I've no idea where that would be.

Apparently they've had ring-tailed lemurs born again this year. Definitely a pair of twins. I was told there were at least 3 but unless they've got another female in Humbug is the only one, all the others being Tink the male and their all male offspring.

Thanks Orangeperson. There was a ring-tailed lemur suckling two babies in lemur wood.

Yep - pair of Ring-tailed twins (the Brown/White-faced Lemurs were being kept in the housing on Saturday as they had been bothering the mother and young). Also a young eland in the rear of the paddock.

The Raccoon Dogs are indeed just next to the Red River Hogs (on the way out towards South America and where the Polar bears will be) - 'Pepe' the skunk lives in the show animal building next door but the best bet is to watch the Meet the Animals show if you want to see him. I've watched the 12.30 show the last three times I have been and he's always been included (it's usually macaws, Barn Owl, skunk - it's not very formal so you can drift in and out).

There have been 2 major additions to the "residents" of Y.W.P. over the last few days.

Freya the female Amur Leopard has arrived from Estonia.:D She arrived on Friday after a 3 day journey and is now in the smallest, and quitest, enclosure at the rear of the 3 leopard areas. She also has access to 2 indoor "houses",and will be allowed time to get used to her new surroundings before being allowed into the next enclosure along. Then its planned that she will alternate access of the largest exhibit with Drake as it used to be when there were the 3 brothers. Its not looking like they will be introduced to each other til next spring at the earliest. Apparently Freya is still very timid, and also only about half the size of Drake.

There has also been a 5th Giraffe added to the bachelor herd of males at Y.W.P. :) Jenga is a young reticulated Giraffe,18 months old if memory serves me correctly, and arrived on Saturday. I went on Sunday at 10-30am and he was out of the Giraffe house and mingling and interacting with the others already. He kept himself to himself when the first talk of the day took place,as it gets a bit boisterous ,but it was good to see him acclimatised so quickly. I will hopefully get some photos of him on here later today.

There is also word of a Polar bear being very close to arrival. It was supposed to have arrived last Friday but hit a hitch.Fingers crossed it arrives soon. I'm sure they are deperate to get one here ready for the school holidays as they missed out on their big new exhibit that usually takes place at Easter time every year.:)

Visited today and found that the Animals in Action Theatre is now in the corner paddock next to Addax and hunting dogs. There is also a new species of owl in the woodland aviaries which will probably be part of the show.
An area of woodland is being cleared just beyond the World Farm enclosure. Could be a route through to the bears when ready or more excitingly an enclosure for a new addition?
Most fascinating part of today's visit was the amphibian migration. We noticed a small frog in the car park on arrival, but then observed over 2 dozen similar sized frogs crossing the path between the African plains and the woodland behind the wallabies. Weather was warm and humid and ground wet from last nights rain, so could have been ideal conditions for an amphibian exodus.

Some people were helping a little frog across the road when I arrived.

Actually saw the anteater outside for oooh... 30 seconds....

And the skunk.

Lemur babies are probably boys, would mean out of 9 ringtail offspring seven have been boys, one girl and one I don't know. The reckon they are happy with boys because they cause less trouble than females.

BBC Look North - who are always keen to televise YWP at the slightest provocation - brought this to my attention - a new road due to open early 2016 linking the M18 to Robin Hood Airport and also providing new access to YWP. As a regular visitor coming from out of town this will certainly have its advantages, as the final stages of the route are fiddly and liable to city traffic problems. Should be good news for YWP, long-term.

Look great, I really want to visit now.

The giraffe enclosure looks pretty small though. Not inadequate by any means, but more like something I'd expect from an old urban zoo, not something brand new with huge paddocks. Hope they get that access sorted soon.

Don't judge the Giraffe enclosure by the pictures on here its bigger than it looks, the house alone would fit Dudley's Giraffe House inside it atleast 5 times but then it doesn't look that big in the pictures!!

I can reiterate what zoogiraffe is saying. It is deceptively large. If you look in the gallery at pictures myself and banham tiger have posted it gives some sort of idea of size. I do agree that it does need a grass paddock a.s.a.p. but the Polar Bear exhibit is taking considerably longer to build than anticipated so I cant see anything being done this of Xmas I'm afraid.:o

I thought the plan has always been to connect up with giraffe paddock to the African savannah .... at some point. I assume given all other building work and planning they just have not gotten round to this yet.

And yes, the giraffe indoor is massive compared to Dudley's ....!!!

That WAS the original plan Kifaru Bwana, but I think that idea has now been shelved. I don't know the reasoning, maybe the risk of injury to the Giraffes from the Elands or Ankole Cattle's horns,or maybe the cost of having to re-new the whole perimeter fence in Giraffe proof steel cabling and up-rated posts is a prohibitive factor. I'm sure something will happen in the next few months as the management never seem to take long to rectify any short comings.:)

Fingers crossed there will be news regarding Tshuna's pregnancy in the next couple of weeks too. Along with Victors imminent arrival, its going to be an exciting next few weeks at Y.W.P. :D

Can't wait to get back to YWP in the next few weeks. No 2 visits are ever the same with the expansion that seems to be never ending. Now Victor is here and apparently two more male Polar Bears lined up what do we think will be the next species introduced to the park?

Perhaps now the UK government is going to ban circus animals in the Uk, we might get to see Elephants or other animals used in circuses.

I know Yorkshire wildlife park saved a Camel from a closed down circus so you never know. Also the owner of the park - John Minion is an elephant expert (he once rescue a circus elephant and helped it go to a zoo in London)

The government has not banned Animals in Circus in the UK,it has brought in some very high standards that they have to meet to be allowed to keep them,in fact if I want to see a fat and un-healthy Big Cat I will visit a zoo!

Circuses in England will be prohibited from using wild animals in their shows from the beginning of December 2015, the government has announced.

Ministers were initially reluctant to bring in a blanket ban - demanded by many MPs and campaigners - in case of legal action by operators.

Agriculture minister David Heath said the two-year "grace period" would allow circus owners to arrange suitable care.

There are currently 20 licensed wild animals working in circuses.

These include camels, zebras and snakes, but not elephants, monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees or big cats.

Well in that case it just goes to show what the government know and your good self knows then as there are BIG CATS in a UK circus,I know as I have seen them 3 times this year!

Also your figure of only 20 licensed wild animals doesn't add up either as I know that in just 1 circus currently touring in the UK now they have more than that!

If this does go through you can rest assured that the wonderfull people that are so anti- animals in circus will move onto closing all Zoo's in this country as well!!
