Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2014

I will try and help if I can.

The following enclosures are pretty much as stated on the old map/plan.

Lemur woods.. Wallaby walk-through..Hogs (Red-river variety)...African plains....Camels....South American (now incorporating Squirrel monkey walk-through).
Huntings dogs was current until this week, now moving to Farm animals section.
Hoofstock close to that is now only Addax.
Big cats at the top are the 3 Lion enclosures.
Big cats nearer the bottom are now Land of the Tiger and Leopard heights.
Polar bear enclosures will fill the area above the line that goes right to left depicting where the camels are. That area runs right up to the border of their property.

There is a "dead" area, that is the land bordered in black, that is a water treatment works  so can never be purchased or developed.

Nothing in the area to the left of the giraffes and big cats has been touched yet. There is a very big lake and wetlands that will never be developed from what I can tell. The river torne runs within 100 yards of the Land of the tigers and floods periodically.
The public footpath discussed earlier in this thread is the brown line that starts on the left near the car-park/w.c. and goes across to the right hand limit past the buildings and out past where it says meerkat experience.

Sorry but I have no idea of acreage at moment.Maybe try working it out from Google images?

Hope this helps people that haven't been.:)

Yes, thanks it does( for me anyway) It seems future developments could be compromised a little by the available space that is left and they may have to be careful they don't run out of space for planned new species?

I wonder if things like 'Asian Rhino' and 'Asian Hoofstock' as on this plan are still planned or not, as they are the species which would use up most space.

I'm excited by the prospect of Rhino and the tropical house. I'd love to see something like that at YWP.

Which great ape would people like to see at YWP?

Presumably they know how much land they have to work with and therefore wouldn't plan all the above knowing they couldn't fit it in?!

I'd like chimps but that's never going to happen. They had gorillas and Bornean orangutans on that collection plan a couple of years ago.

I'd like Sumatran orangutans if I can't have chimps.

Not sure polar bears were in the original plans.

Exactly. Polar Bears weren't on this plan, and the spacious and highly desirable enclosures have eaten up quite a large chunk of the available land.

Is that the lake along the bottom of the plan just above the words 'Great Apes'? It looks big. Hippos would be great provided they could have a reasonable piece of landspace too.

Sumatran Orangutan are much lacking in the UK- only at Chester- and Jersey Channel Islands, and the single young male at Monkeyworld. I'd like to see more.

For Apes at YWP I'd vote for Sumatran Orangutans(breeding) and a new holder of bachelor male Gorillas.

Does the lake have an outflow? If not then it's going to get pretty nasty, very quickly if you put hippos in there.

I really cant see any development of the lake ever being feasible. There is a river (River Torne) running right by the side of it. I don't think they would ever getting planning permission to do anything that close to it. It would be a pity too as its a lovely natural area and in my opinion should act as a nice natural barrier to any sort of development.

In my opinion I hope they don't do any large scale development for a couple of years. They have gone for big apex predators (which I absolutely love by the way) but would like to see them do some smaller enclosures and diversify just a little.I think they need some sort of indoor viewing as there is nowhere to go in inclement or cold weather at present, unless you retreat into the playbarn or gift shop.
I may start a new thread on peoples wish lists, primarily aimed at people who have been and can see areas of the park that could be developed without increasing the footprint of the site dramatically.:)

Right back in the beginning they talked about gibbons using some of the wooded area, that would be lovely, nothing better than gibbons swinging through trees.

perhaps they should get something like red pandas because they make a nice little enclosure and don't take up much room.

i personally would love to see rhinos at yorkshire:)

Website map updated - now includes Project Polar and confirms the construction near the baboons as a new African Wild Dog enclosure: Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Just above the Addax there is an empty plot. Is that where the painted dogs were? I wonder what they will end up putting in there? Looking forward to a new pack of dogs in a new enclosure, does any one have any idea where they're sourcing them from?

I would suggest that they will be sourced from the EAZA surplus list via the studbook!

From the plans are they going to build a train or monorail???

It would certainly appear so veeboy. It would go round the perimeter of the African plains area then past the Giraffe enclosure and building then around another so-far undeveloped area. Maybe the Rhinos that have already been mentioned?
This was submitted over a year ago though, things might well have changed since then. The polar bear exhibits are quite a bit different to plan, but the housing block and limits are still basically as drawn.:)
