Yorkshire Wildlife Park Yorkshire Wildlife Park News 2021

Beautiful Drake.
In answer to some of you questions, the lions are in three pairs - Maria and Simba (mother and son), Ares and Julie, Carla and Crystal (sisters and also sisters to Julie). The hyenas are Granada and Speedy and their son Maverick. Speedy has been kept apart since Maverick’s birth. There are three Roloways, can’t remember parents names but baby is Kamasi. The binterong are very often a no show but here is one.View attachment 507319

@YWP fan do you know how old the Lions are? Also what were Drakes Brothers called I know one was Denzil but what was his other Brother called. Have Drake and his Mate Freya every had Cubs if yes what are thier names and are they still residing at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Regarding the Polar Bears will Flocke and her Cubs reside at Yorkshire Wildlife Park permanently? I hope that the male Cubs will eventually join Nobby,Luka and the other Male whose name fails me. I think that Flocke and/or her Cubs should be introduced too one of the Males and form a breeding pair.

Drake and Freya did have 2 male cubs a few years back I think. They both moved on. Not sure about names but u think one was called Teva. Ywp put a video on Facebook a few days ago giving an update on flocke and her cubs saying that when flocke is ready the boys will go to the other project polar to live with the boys and that the female cub would either stay with flocke or move to a new collection. There was however no mention the breeding. The 4 male polar bears are nobby, luka, sisu and hamish
Hope this helps

I think some of your questions have been answered. The leopard Cubs are Anadyr and Teva, born June 2015 and have moved on, can’t remember where.
The lions were born as follows - Maria 2006, Simba 2009, Ares 2008, Carla, Crystal and Julie 2007.
The update video mentioned on YouTube is only a few days old and Kim lays out the possible plans for the Cubs.

@YWP fan The Lions are relatively young still then. I believe the original Pride Leader Johnny SR was 25 when he passed. Taking this into consideration the Lions who currently reside at Yorkshire Wildlife Park should live for at least another decade.

I am about to watch the Polar Bear video but from what yourself and @Keelan have told me Yorkshire Wildlife Park will be Flocke’s Final and permanent home.

@YWP fan and @Keelan I have just watched the Polar Bear video.Off the back of it I have further questions. Firstly I am right in thinking that Flocke has been retired from the Breeding Program, hence the separation of her and Rasputin. Secondly will Flocke ever leave Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Thirdly will any of the Bachelor Boys move to other places.

As far as I know, Rasputin was sent temporarily to YWP because of the risk to the Cubs when they were young. He was then identified as a mate for a female in Tallin. Flocke and the Cubs were brought to YWP presumably as a better environment for them. I have not heard if Flocke will eventually be required for breeding again. The two males will be moved into the bachelor pad sometime in the next year or so. Any of the boys at Project polar could move for breeding. The most likely in the short term will be Nobby, Sisu or Luka as they are the oldest. Hamish and the two male Cubs will probably be here for a while I guess. Pixel and Nissan moved last year.
By the way, Drake’s other brother is Dimitri.

I was told previously that the only likely breeder of the 4 bears at the time (Vic, Nissan, Pixel & Nobby) was Nissan and indeed he duly went off to breed. I don't think Nobby is likely unless things have changed.

The Roloway monkeys are called Rafiki (male, dad) and Kayla (female, mum) with Kumasi (male, son).

Has the park ever considered adding some form of public transport? I visited yesterday and was struck by how much walking it actually takes to finish the loop. Someone in my visiting group said we’d walked around five miles, which is a lot when you’re also pushing someone in a wheelchair over mostly difficult ground (accessibility is something else which needs improving, the disabled parking may as well be regular parking given the distance from the new entrance).

Interesting. I think adding a monorail from the right side of the hive to the bottom of the park near lemur woods would be great.

Keelan. In response to your query a while ago, I was speaking to one of the Painted Dogs keepers earlier this week. There are currently 5 dogs in total - a pack of three which includes the twins born last year and one other presumably from the first litter of 7 and a pack of two, presumably from the 7. They are kept separately as they don’t get on. I saw the interaction myself - they wind each other up between the two areas. The keeper said one of the packs would probably move on. I hope they keep the twins as I remember them being born and the sad loss of their Mum when they were young.

@YWP fan thanks for that info. Wishful thinking buy I hope one of the packs could make their way to Knowsley safari park to add some more animals to the carnivore section.

i think they would move the group of three because it had a male in it and if they wanted to breed then it would be easier to get rid of the pack with the male in soo there’s less of a alpha struggle

Glad it's not just me a little boggled by that..! I don't think it's completely unjustifiable as English, but it is definitely not the natural word choice.
maybe they were trying to confirm it was a filtrated pool rather then being largely untreated. People may have thought that because of how big it is.
