Yorkshire Wildlife Park YWP Project Polar

We need some updated pictures/photos of the polar bear enclosure! I hope they get Yupi to Doncaster, after all this effort and money raised for Yupi.

When I have spoken to any members of the "carnivore" keepers at Y.W.P. they seem to except that the Mexican bear will never arrive. I think it was pretty much dead in the water before it started. It is their number 1 attraction and aren't just going to give it away.
They also said that its possible that pairs of bears could be accommodated if they are already familiar with each other. I assume that would be same sex animals though.
Cant wait for this exhibit to finally come to fruition, another massive feather in Y.W.P's cap if they pull it off anywhere like as good as most of their other exhibits. I hope they add some other Arctic tundra based animals too such as Arctic fox, snowy owl/wolves etc.( but definitely NO penguins :o )

Assinniboine/Winnipeg Zoo in Manitoba has now established itself as a centre for Polar Bear conservation and is trying to "help" any animals that may need relocation such as the elderly male in Argentina, but although there is huge public pressure to relocate him, as with "Yupi" from Mexico, at the end of the day it does all come down to the zoos in question being in complete agreement with any decisions ?? Unfortunately some of these single bears, in possibly unsuitable conditions, may be clearly recognised as such by us, but are usually not always recognised as such by their owner-zoos of course.
We have seen this before with other animals in the media and in what are perceived to be unsuitable conditions by us observers.
There is an on-line petition at the moment calling for the Argentinian bear to be moved to Canada.
It was always more likely that surplus males will be moved to YWP before any female arrives, but HWP should really get first refusal of any potential suitable female. That said I would imagine they would prefer a younger female from within the EEP in order to breed, whereas YWP`s situation is a little different of course.

I wouldn't mind penguins as long as it's not one of the common species.

I suspect you will have to ask for your money back from Born Free,as it was never going to happen, given there anti-zoo stance!!!

The interesting touch here is that money by Born Free on this has quite possibly been raised thru a "complete mist" purpose without even prior consultation / agreement nor consent from the originator Latino zoo and thus the moneys raised for this particular project is a "fraudulent" exercise.
I agree with zoogiraffe that you should ask them for a re-fund and see what happens!

I cannot imagine that YWP would associate itself with Born Free under these circumstances.

Finally, I concur with Nanook et al that it is far more likely that YWP will receive a polar bear of similar age from the European breeding program and - no doubt - have consulted with them prior to even considering building a polar bear exhibit at Doncaster per se. Now that they have received their first polar bear from the EEP, it is a question of time before a suitable same sex play mate or a youngish / sub-adult female polar bear will enter ... Give it a half- to a full year at the latest! :)

I don't think he is actually there yet, but he's a fully adult male so he might not take kindly to a same sex 'playmate', I don't know. But adult males are quite solitary a lot of the time so I don't see any problem about him living alone for a time, apart from public perceptions possibly. Like you I would imagine another bear(s) will be sourced within the coming months.

I don't think he is actually there yet.

He wasn't there by Sunday when I last attended.

I think the media circus will be well informed as soon as he does arrive. The summer holidays have started and they will want to get as much publicity as possible for the only Polar bear in England.:)

I spoke to one of the keepers who sort of resigned himself to the fact that pretty much as soon as he arrives he will be on show. You cant blame the park owners as they have laid out massive amounts of money on this exhibit and need to reclaim some as soon as possible. Just hope he doesn't get too stressed and shys away from view points.

There is a good argument for animals like this arriving in the depths of Winter when they have plenty of time to settle in undisturbed. As you say this one is arriving peak season and they will want him out and on show a.s.a.p.

The way the YWP enclosure are laid out and the fact you can't go inside means that 'on show' is much less disturbing there than some other places.

Wonder if Victor has arrived yet

Still hoping for Yupi

So little news??
Yupi was just a very good piece of PR,anybody with any sense knew it would never happen given that the other party's involved,in trying to get the animal out of Mexico are all very ANTI-ZOO!!!

No Victor as of last Thursday evening (7-8-14). I have seen the limits of the second enclosure to be nearly finished (can be seen from inside the South American themed walk-through enclosure) and it looks huge.
I have a feeling Victor will be arriving this week. Just hope he settles quickly as I have a couple of days booked off at the end of the week :o

I think Victor is on his way or already here.
I was looking on twitter and found this...

Early morning start to meet and greet a One Show film crew and "Victor" the polar bear, on his way to Yorkshire Wildlife Park! :o) #cool

Looks like The ONE show is filming his arrival at the moment

Excellent news - I have a visit planned for late October (hopefully! :D) so would like to get a life tick with Polar Bear.

Tempted to pop over at the weekend but I guess he'll still be off-show. Wonder if they'll have a special 'launch-type' event like they did with the lions.
