Yorkshire Wildlife Park YWP Project Polar

The keepers have been told to keep quiet, and wouldn't let anything slip on Thursday evenings Safari night.
:)

Just confirmed on the One Show that Victor arrived yesterday and is expected to be on view from next Monday if all goes to plan..

It looks like one I made in Zoo Tycoon :)

It looks very impressive- your 'Bearworks' is quite a suitable name I think ;) though no doubt its called 'Arctic Tundra ' or something. It seems any incoming Polar Bears to the UK (both here and at HWP) have never had it so good.

only seen polar bears in zoo twice and I cant believe the difference between flamingoland and Amsterdam zoo. Is it 2 of these style fields they plan on doing?

All looks very impressive!

I only have vague memories of seeing polars in the UK at Flamingoland, other than that it's Seaworld Orlando.

Hopefully, this marks the return of Polar bears to the UK-a species high on my wish list for Whipsnade!

They never really went away, you just weren't looking hard enough. :D

Agree that it would be fantastic for Whipsnade to get them (not sure three bear species would get past "committee" though).

This really is the way forward for polar bear husbandry. I can't believe exhibits are still being constructed which are basically just mock rock grottos with a swimming pool when this is an option.

Though at least they are now adding the dimension of a range of substrates instead of just concrete or...... maybe concrete!!

Yorkshire Wildlife Website is fully updated with news and videos

The key information I got from the YWP website is that "Another two male bears are due to arrive before the end of the year."

Also from the videos and information they are pushing to rescue bears from other tropical climates..."Project Polar has the capacity to offer homes to bears outside Europe who may be kept in substandard conditions, possibly hot climates."

Awesome stuff...save Yupi!

I saw on a news video - Cheryl Williams and John Minion mention they are still trying with Yupi

Also John mentions 2 new bears from Hannover Zoo in a couple of months

Today's Daily Telegraph has 2 pictures of victor in the enclosure one shows him eating a fish. The only other P bears I can recall seeing was in Edinburgh, Amsterdam and the USA

From memory, I have seen Polar Bears in the past at the following UK Zoos;

London
Whipsnade
Bristol
Chester
Dudley
Edinburgh
Flamingo Park
Chessington
BelleVue, Manchester(possibly)

Possibly also at Belfast if they had them at the time(early1970's) and Dublin(Eire).

I have just posted a few pictures from a very short visit after work today. The keepers had just finished keeping him in the accommodation block whilst they tidied his outside area up and he didn't seem too keen to go back into the main enclosure. There were a couple of families with young children who screamed every time he walked from the "house" under the walkway towards the outside area and he would walk back inside again. As soon as they left he was a lot more confident and went outside a few times, but never very far in.(The keepers did say he might not go back out as he had been out most of the day and would probably want a snooze.) He also brought a broom head and plastic container in from his enclosure and took them very carefully inside.:D

Definitely Edinburgh and HWP, I also recall there being Polar Bear(s) at Glasgow when I was a kid and Flamingoland. I think there might have been some at Cameron Bear Park as well.
