Yorkshire Wildlife Park YWP Project Polar

Definitely Edinburgh and HWP, I also recall there being Polar Bear(s) at Glasgow when I was a kid and Flamingoland. I think there might have been some at Cameron Bear Park as well.

The Flamingo Land polar bears Mandy and Marcus came from the Thorney Wildlife Park when it closed.

From memory, I have seen Polar Bears in the past at the following UK Zoos;

London
Whipsnade
Bristol
Chester
Dudley
Edinburgh
Flamingo Park
Chessington
BelleVue, Manchester(possibly)

Possibly also at Belfast if they had them at the time(early1970's) and Dublin(Eire).

Did London have four polar bears at one time on the Mappins, Sally, Sam, their son pipaluk and Sabrina?

There is of coarse Zara, the female polar bear who lives at Jim and Sally Clubb's private zoo at Heythrop, Chipping Norton.

I have heard claims on Facebook that this individual may have passed away in recent months, although I have no idea as to the veracity of this.

Been to Yorkshire Wildlife Park today. Project Polar is very impressive. its much bigger than it looks on the photos.

The lady-keeper said that the whole project is two-thirds finished and hopefully all be finished as soon as possible.

She also confirmed two more polar bears from a German zoo. She said the German(Hanover) zoo didn't want to let the two polar bears go but because of the breeding programme they have to. She said the new bears will arrive around December/New Year

Any update or pictures of enclosure number 2 at Project polar???

I'm taking my kids to Y.W.P. tomorrow actually,so I will take some pictures of enclosure 2 if there has been any significant change in the 2 weeks since I have last attended. :)

Awesome cant wait to see them, thanks

Sorry veeboy31,but you are going to have to wait a little longer. There had been no noticeable changes done to enclosure 2 on Saturday. I asked the keeper what the hold up was,and he informed me that the contractors were waiting for management to check that Victor was fully settled before any work resumed.:(
There looks like there has been lots of big bags of top soil stock piled in the area where enclosures 3 and 4 will be,so work hasn't stopped completely. Doubt it will be long before it starts again in earnest.:)

There did appear to be a new "road" round to where the new African Hunting dog enclosure is going to be,but I didn't go round to the baboons to see how its going. Was too busy watching Victor showing off with a water trough in his lake. Pictures to follow soon ;)

Wonder if there is any more progress at project polar

any updates??

Still no change at enclosure number 2 I'm afraid.:(
There is an issue regarding the construction at the moment,so all contractors are concentrating on the new African Hunting dog enclosure until that is rectified. That enclosure is nearly finished so maybe they will get back on enclosure 2 shortly. There is more enrichment in the way of large floating logs for Victor to play with. He was stripping and eating the outer bark from an 8 foot long silver birch tree yesterday whilst swimming around with it. He had a big pile of water-melons too which drew lots of comments about them not being very suitable to arctic tundra conditions! He didn't seem to care and happily carried them around and devoured them.:D

what is the issue with construction??

Been to Yorkshire Wildlife park today (12.10.14)

Still no further work on enclosure 2 of project polar

Did manage to speak to one of the keepers

She said that Enclosure two would be ready during the winter in time for the two new polar bears from Germany.

She said it would be unlikely that the two new bears would mix with Victor when they arrive. Maybe in the future they might mix them around.

She said they can have up to eight bear unless they get a female bear, then at most can only have four.

She said that enclosures three and four would be ready for next summer

Still no progress on Polar bear enclosure number 2. But the African hunting dog enclosure is now finished so the keeper was hopeful that work will commence again very soon.:)

Any idea where the new Painted Dogs have come from? I see from the gallery that 0.4 are now in residence

It was either Germany or Holland Nisha. The keeper wasn't sure and I cant remember which one she finally decided was right.:o

Maybe with a bit of digging someone can find out?:o
