Thanks Jakub. The english translation of the spanish common name of this species would be "japanese crane" even when they have more wide breeding range in maindland Asia than in Japan.
It's one of my favourite cranes too.

Actually, very relevant to this topic is the Ravensburger board game, "Wildlife Adventure" (Funagain Games: Wildlife Adventure (English language edition)). Have any of you played it? It's a great game for animal-lovers, especially lovers of rare animals. For me, when I'm touring a zoo, I always note when I'm seeing a "Wildlife Adventure animal", such as when I saw a Gyrfalcon at the Woodland Park Zoo.

By the way, a LOT of the animals being listed in this thread are in the game.

I've noticed vicuna in a couple of posts, when they are a common animal to be seen in a zoo within the UK. Why is it they are rare in North America?

Platypus
Proboscis Monkey - Singapore

Whale Shark - Georgia Aquarium, Taiwan, Dubai, and soon Singapore
Numbat - only in Australia
Great White Shark - nowhere at the moment
Kagu - San Diego
Cuscus (any species) - ?
Leopard Seal - Taronga
Hawk-headed Parrot - Woodland Park, Phoenix, Wildlife World, and more
Black-footed Ferret - SD WAP and more

Here's where you need to go, some are quite close to you, others not so much...

Ground cuscus - Prague, Frankfurt, Budapest, Artis, Amersfoort and about 3 zoos in UK (Twycross, Blackpool and Burford ).

And platypus are in a couple of places in Australia. Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo, Taronga Zoo, Sydney Aquarium.

I wouldn`t say they where common in the U.K as you can only see them at Belfast,Blackpool,Chester,Edinburgh,Marwell and Twycross which considering there are over 300 animal collections in the U.K its not that many.

Dallas World Aquarium had a Silky Anteater, and Columbus had a cuscus. Both statements may now be in the past tense, however.....
