Zoo animals you want to see but haven't yet

This is an interesting topic - groups where we're one or two species away from seeing every species. I recently 'completed' storks, with the Greater Adjutants at Hanoi and Saigon Zoos. However, groups I'm still 'one away' on include:

- peccaries (need to see Chacoan)
- tapirs (need to see Mountain)
- cranes (need to see Whooping)
- crocodilians (on a pre-splitting 23-species taxonomy - need to see Orinoco Croc)
- tuataras (need to see guentheri :D )

How far are you on your hyena's? I need to make an UK or Berlin trip to get the Aardwolf and then I have my set complete.

I'm lucky enough to have had my full set for some years. It was (I think) Prague's Browns back in 2003 that completed it.

I saw Aardwolves at Living Desert (and possibly San Diego Zoo..? Would have to check) in 1998 and many times since (Twycross being nearby was a help with this until recently and I've also seen tham at Hamerton, RSCC and Berlin).

African forest elephant
West African giraffe
Bornean Asian elephant
Dhole
Bushdog
Tuatara
Whale shark
Manta ray

Zoogiraffe I've just started getting into zoos last year. So some day my list will come down. There's a lot more I didn't even list like antelopes, gazelle, tarsier, proboscis monkey, javan rhino. I will tell you one thing thou I saw all species of bears which not a whole lot of people can say they did.

And also some species were at zoos I was at but they weren't out due to weather or maintence to exhibit. Bush dog, pudu, markhor, banded palm civet, maned wolf, moholi bushbaby and cape flawless otter or spotted neck otters.

We all have to start somewhere,as for Bears last year I saw every species in 2 days in 1 city.

I've been trying to think what other groups I may have seen all or almost all of the species in, but because of the poor diversity in Australasian zoos its a bit difficult. However I just need dwarf cassowary to have seen all the living ratites! (I'm pretty sure I've seen both species of rhea....). And just two Zaglossus to go before having seen all the monotremes (which will be pretty much impossible :()

I've seen all the ratites with the exception of kiwis, of which I've only ever seen one (North Island Brown).

Monotremes - also only ever seen one species (T. aculeatus, of course).

It's time to revisit my list! Since making this list I have seen Siberian musk deer in San Diego and Australian brush turkeys at Wildlife World Zoo.

I'm going to redesign my list, and this time stick to species that can be seen within my geographical region, ie North America. If a species can be found in multiple places, I'll list the closest or most likely for me to get to. Here goes:

Tasmanian Wombat - Rio Grande Zoo
Yapok - Dallas World Aquarium (although apparently not presently)
Three-toed Sloth - Dallas World Aquarium
Aye-Aye - Denver Zoo
Potto - Cincinnati Zoo
Red Uakari - Los Angeles (though not on show)
Red Howler Monkey - Dallas World Aquarium

Wolverine - Northwest Trek
Giant Otter - Los Angeles Zoo
Persian Onager - The Wilds
Vicuna - Assiniboine Park Zoo

Maleo - Bronx Zoo
Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture - Hogle Zoo (bird show)
Black Hawk-eagle - Dallas World Aquarium
Black-and-White Hawk-eagle - Dallas World Aquarium
Guianan Crested Eagle - Dallas World Aquarium
Blue-throated Macaw - Tracy Aviary
Resplendent Quetzal - Dallas World Aquarium (Off Show)
Giant Hummingbird - Dallas World Aquarium
Tuatara (either species) - Dallas Zoo
Inland Fierce Snake - Dallas Zoo
Orinoco Crocodile - Dallas World Aquarium

Hmm...it would appear I need to make a trip to Dallas.

I'm lacking all the tinamous, all the kiwis and two out of three cassowaries :p I reckon I'll be happy once I've got at least one tinamou and at least one kiwi, such that I have seen all the types of ratite, if not all the species.

I wouldn't count tinamous as ratites so you're closer than you think! :D

we were only talking about the flightless ratites, as in the original avian sense of the term (tinamous don't count.....er, because I've never seen one)

Jerez Zoo in Spain keeps Iberian Lynx, but not, I believe, on-show.

They are - in fact, except for the few directly involved in their care, even those working at the zoo are prohibited from seeing them as the aim is to reintroduce them into the wild, so preventing any risk of humanisation is key.

I've certainly seen three (Elegant Crested, Red-winged, Small-billed). Didn't always pay as close attention to birds as I do now so could have seen others at some point. Fun birds.

Well then, I'm only missing all the kiwis except the North Island brown, and the single-wattled cassowary.

Which sounds impressive until I think it means I've seen ostrich, both rheas, emus, two cassowaries and a kiwi...I don't wanna play this game anymore. :P
