A male Black-and-rufous sengi (Rhynchocyon petersi) (*November 2020) arrived from Rotterdam zoo, this is a new species for Basel Zoo and he can be found in Haus Tembea. This species is now kept in 9 European zoos according to ZootierListe.
On the 28th of April a male and a female South African cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) were born to parents Dina (female) and Ross (male). This the first time that Dina had young, she arrived at the zoo last November.
This year 2 Western common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) were born!
On the 26th of June 28-year old female Fifi gave birth to a female, however after 2 weeks she became paralyzed in her hind legs. No cause has been found yet and her hind leggs are still paralyzed. Luckly her sister Kitoko took care of Fifi's offspring and also started nursing it. In July Kitoko gave birth to a male, since then she has been taking care of both young!
Last march the female johnstone crocodile laid ten eggs of four hatched in may. Two of the young survive until now.
The Zoo is the second in the world (outside Australia) to have a hatching of this species.
Since February a new species of tang can be found in the vivarium: the Jewelled tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum). Only 2 other zoos in Europe keep this species according to ZTL.
On the 13th of November a Somali wild ass (Equus africanus somaliensis) was born.
A second (male?) octopus arrived at the zoo a few weeks ago, recently he ha been put on display in Schaubecken 43 in the Vivarium. I am not sure which species of octopus Zoo Basel keeps, maybe someone knows this?
Sadly 20-year old male Kalahari lion (Panthera leo vernayi) Mbali passed away last Friday. He arrived with 2 females (Uma & Okoa) from Nationl Parks Pilanesberg and Madikwe in South Africa in 2003, during his time in Zoo Basel he father a total of 18 offspring. Zoo Basel now only has 3 females left.
