Berlin Zoo Zoo Berlin News

Knieriem from zoo munich will be new head at both Berlin Zoo and Tierpark. I don't know him that well but it seems like he is a very good choice indeed. I am really happy about this!

In a move which suggests there is a push to expand the number of collections holding the species - considering Paignton Zoo has also gone into the species - Berlin Zoo is now keeping West Caucasian Tur :)

Have they replaced one of the other wild goat species? (tahr, Siberian ibex, Creta wild goat?)

Magdeburg zoo has sent its male Japanese serow to Berlin to hopefully breed with their 2 females.

Where is the serow enclosure at Berlin Zoo? Is it around the cattle house? How long have they had serow for?

Scratch that, I remember now - they are in the extension area.

According to the"Bz", one of Berlins Yellow Press Newspaper, "the most ugly Animal at the Zoo"passed away-the Aye-Aye Male"Mario". He was at the Zoo since 2007.

I wonder what will take its place in the exhibit. A new aye-aye might be hard to come by, so perhaps a new species?

If I am not mistaken, Berlin Zoo still holds 0,1 Aye-aye.

@TLD, that is correct, but Berlin has 2 aye-aye exhibits... But sourcing another animal from the zoo in Antananarivo wouldn't be impossible I think, as they still keep a number of aye-ayes...

Not news, but I hope someone can comment on the status of Atelopus stubfoot toads in Berlin.

According to zootierliste, Atelopus spumarius is kept at Berlin. There has typically been a few years between my visits to Berlin, so I may have missed it. However, despite specifically looking for it, I have never seen it there; not seen on my visit a few months ago either. The photo used for this species on zootierliste is actually Ameerega trivittata (a poison dart frog) of the orange form, known from a small part of Suriname and described in 2012 as race nassaui.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone here has seen an Atelopus in Berlin?

I do not know whether this is a recent edit, but there seems to be a note on the listing saying the species has been "onshow since December" - naturally this could well apply to any given December as the editor has not given a year, but if it is a new edit this would imply the species has been offshow until recently.

The entire zootierliste text

"seit 2009 (seit Dez. in der Schau)
- Besuch 12/2009
- Besuch 04/2010 (gesehen)
- Besuch 04/2012 (gesehen)"
=
since 2009 (since December in show)
- Visited 12/2009
- Visited 04/2010 (seen)
- Visited 04/2012 (seen)"

This isn't new; all was there before my last visit months ago. I have made a total of three visits to Berlin since December 2009, but never seen an Atelopus there. Of course it is possible I simply missed it. However, considering the problematic ID of the photo (which is entirely understandable as orange Ameerega trivittata only became well known quite recently), I can't help but wonder if a real Atelopus ever has been on show. Hopefully someone can give a more definitive answer.

Just for the record, a new second photo by K. Vick has been uploaded to zootierliste since my comment. This photo shows the real thing.
