Zoo de Granby Zoo de Granby news

The five female dholes have arrived. Four are 8 years old and one is 9 years old. They are hoping for breeding, though they are not sure if the females are too old already.

In other news, a giraffe is coming to Granby from Toronto. I don’t have any other information on that.
I did not see it announced on Facebook. Can you send me the source?

These came in from SD-WAP?

The giraffe is an odd move. Toronto has Masai Giraffe, where my understanding is the giraffes at Granby are Rothschild? Would be an odd move for the SSP to make.

It’s from a newspaper, in French: Here

They only wrote that they came from California, but it’s been said before that they would come from SD-WAP, so I assume that is the case.

Granby is down to two female giraffes (not even sure if they are pure Rothschild) could it be the young female from Toronto to free some space over there?

(not even sure if they are pure Rothschild)

There are no pure Rothschild's giraffe in North America. Or Reticulated giraffes, for that matter.

The only purebred population of giraffe in North America is the Masai giraffe.

Despite it being common for North American zoos to sign their non-Masai giraffes as either Rothschild's or Reticulated, the AZA manages all non-Masai giraffes as a single mixed blood population. Calls 'em "Generic giraffes".

I think that the giraffe would be a male, Matu. Kiko is heading to Calgary to exchange with Nabo. The female will definitely stay and her daughter is super valuable. Matu is the only one left. Since you are a person from Quebec. I remember that they had a herd of zebra and giraffes. Why did they go down to two giraffes and 4 zebras?

I remember that the young female, Amani's mother is one of the most valuable females in NA with Amani after her. I will go check if my info is good

Yeah the mother is number one for genetics and the daughter is I think something like 8, so I doubt either will be given up ever unless the can’t get a new breeding bull. Nabo’s move was recommended almost two years ago now, so we’ll see if that even happens.

Well, they are getting Nabo from Calgary. But they seem to not give Nabo to Toronto. Nabo was a character in "The Last of Us" . If Calgary doesn't accept, there is many other males in the US. Toronto owns one of the most valuable giraffes and SSP would sure want to breed them. Well this should be in Toronto forums but I am just talking a little bit of it.
Edit: In the article: Une nouvelle espèce très attendue arrive au Zoo de Granby
They say Granby has a capacity of 15 dholes in the exhibit. Also, the dhole is the 192 species at the zoo and the Masai giraffe would the 193 species coming in spring

I think I did not memorize correctly. According to the Toronto zoo animal death, transfer, and birth, Kiko is going to the US. Matu is the one exchanging with NABO in Calgary. Kiko may be the one that comes. He is a low-rank male and Matu is a high-rank male

I think you're right I would rather send Kiko as he has very low genetic value and he could possibly breed with their females anyways since his calves wouldn't make much of a difference with his genetics plus they would be hybrids.

I heard that Zoo Granby females are ranked at top in generic giraffes.
Toledo Zoo in Ohio has applied for a permit to import male Amur leopard Axel (born March 5, 2021) from Zoo de Granby.

Interesting but it shows that TBD is removed by EL PASO. It is Axel the male that is chosen by Toledo. Will the two 0 year old transfer to another zoo ? They are only a few months old.

The Species Survival Plan document they included with the permit application that you excerpted above was prepared in June 2021 so it isn't current. The 2 year old male noted above, SB ID 965, was Milan, who ended up moving to Magnetic Hill Zoo in Canada (instead of El Paso Zoo in Texas), where he tragically passed away on September 20, 2023. The twins noted in the 2021 SSP are Axel and his sister, Zima. Per the import permit application paperwork, Axel has now been assigned Studbook #1041. It doesn't look like anything has been announced yet as far as plans for his sister, Zima, or which female Axel may be recommended to breed with once he arrives in Toledo.

That is why it did not understand. Thanks for specifying.

Piece of March 2024 News Not Mentioned:

On March 26th, the zoo announced they received a 4-year $175,000 grant from the Quebec Wildlife Foundation's Wildlife in Danger program to help wood turtle conservation.

On April 13th, the zoo officially announced that they acquired (0.5) dholes named Berezi, Sadie, Scarlet, Tandoori, and Uski from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California the week prior.

I assume you are talking about the giraffe at Metro Toronto Zoo, because sure as dud I really cannot make out otherwise what you are on about (forgive me but I am not in the know about all names for individual giraffe).

Correct me, if I am wrong, ... but Nabo is the breeding male at Calgary (that for some inexplicable reason will not head to Toronto - what is the issue?), right?

So, Kiko is the adult breeding bull from Metro Toronto Zoo destined to be transferred to Calgary Zoo, right? And as it stands this transfer will happen???

I assume the talk about the 2 females is also down to Metro Toronto Zoo individuals? Then these should be the breeding female ... and her last daughter ..., right?

What is this about a male giraffe Matu ... Toronto or Calgary or other?

BTW: In keeping with the thread Granby only holds 2 female giraffe - they remain nameless ... sorry no names to my knowledge - both born in 2016 at Granby from different cows. These are all that is left of the Granby giraffe. And yes they are generic G. camelopardalis rothschildi/G. reticulata hybrids. There is a note as to their breeding that I cannot reveal (publicly).

Wonder what female will come up from San Diego? The Wild Animal Park holds generic (Rothschild's with Reticulated hybrids/cross-breeds), whereas the Zoo maintains a pure-bred herd of Masai Giraffe.

Yes, I am talking about the Toronto Zoo giraffe. Nabo might be going to Toronto, it is supposed Kiko will exchange with Nabo, but maybe it will change. Matu should be going to the US. Matu is valuable. Toronto zoo females are valuable breeding females. The Zoo Granby females are Kumi and Ushindi

@Zoo adventures, thanks for clarifying. I did look at the studbook and what should happen. I do not understand why it is taking so long to exchange Toronto bull Kiko for Calgary bull Nabo. But perhaps the recommendations have changed over time, I just don't know.

The female coming over from the US (San Diego) to Granby does intrigue me alot. I suppose it is another of those generic giraffe.

I would not mind if they changed to Masai giraffe. They would have the opportunity now and create a more robust Canadian Masai giraffe grouping.

POST SCRIPTUM: I continue fail to see how and why the North American AZA or ZAA is not able to switch gear, phase out generic breeding A.S.A.P. and start importing some pure-bred giraffe from anywhere in Africa (perhaps even going for Angolan, Cape or the Thornicroft's giraffe? It would create a more valuable and unique ex situ conservation breeding and outreach.

POV: I guess it is the inconvenient truth the species coordination are not able to deal with!

The females at Granby's names are Ushindi and Kumi.
