Zoologická Zahrada Jihlava ZOO Jihlava news

The Rotschilds giraffe bull Zuberi (14) has been euthanised. He had chronic arthritis in his joint.

Zuberi came from Bellewaerde in May 2013. He was partialy bottle-reared. He was very friendly to people but also very conservative and disliked any changes. When he first arrived he refused to leave the transport car for whole night. And when he was finally brought into the Jihlava´s giraffe house, he refused to leave it for 3 years. The keepers then used force and scare tactic to finally get him into the outside pen.

Jihlava opened their giraffe exhibit in 2013 - with a bachelor herd of 3 animals. Manu died few years ago, Zuberi now and the last remaining at Jihlava is Paul (ex-Münster).
Will they get new giraffe?

The caracal tripplet litter has been moved bts - those enterprising kittens found a way how to escape from their enclosure. Staff managed to catch them quickly back and moved them (together with their mother) backstage. Their father is the only caracal on exhibit.

Malagasy jumping rats have a tripplet of babies. The family is on show in the giraffe house.

A litter of Jamaican boas (Chilabothrus subflavus) is born and the keeper expects all 3 adult females in the group to give birth more or less simultanously. The zoo keeps a group of 5.3 adults on show in the terarium house - they live peacefully together year-round. Young snakes of various ages are kept backstage, they also live together in one big pile. The oldest offspring is 3 years old and the zoo is desperate to find new homes for them - other zoos show little interest.

PS. the baby hippo born last year to the same parents have not survived so this is first offspring for both of them.

The zoo claimed they're planning on building a new enclosure/pavilion for the pygmy hippos.

The current pymy hippo housing is maybe the worst part of the zoo. Already previous director Jirousek talked about its complete overhaul (building new house plus adding neighbouring pens of lamas etc.) but now we are 20 years later and there is still not even a realistic design ready? That shed the hippos call home is I think older than the zoo itself . Highest time they get a better deal.

Yeah, unfortunately. It used to be a stable for ponies before it got turned into the pygmy hippo enclosure. I don't know if you've ever seen the indoors of it though. Behind the heated indoor space that's available to visitors, there are another three(?) small rooms.
Besides, the zoo also commented they're planning on building a new enclosure for the sumatran tigers. Which is very much needed too.

The whole cat house needs total overhaul, just moving tigers elsewhere is not enough.

The planned exhibit for pygmy hippos is planned on site where nowadays lamas and greater rheas are to be found. Some species of small primate is planned together with them. Tigress must be accommodated within 3 years as it is the restriction from EAZA. Btw. I don't know if it was discussed somewhere above, but the oldest pygmy hippo female was euthanised at age around 40 years. Zoo Wojciechów, suddenly stopped communicating with the zoo, so the planned transport didn't work out. The current breeding female already had 2 pregnancies last year, but killed them both.
